I'm going to restore an old machine for a lady who doesn't have the means to upgrade her Compaq desktop. It has a Celeron processor, and shows 63megs of system ram. I don't know how fast or slow the celeron is. She has the system restore disks for the computer, so it should be easy to get her up and running under Win98SE.
I got involved because her computer got "slower and slower ", so I volunteered. She has dialup with NetZero, and all she is interested is email and the internet.
She seems to have been satisfied with the speed before someone installed Symantec's anti-virus. I uninstalled it, but we all know how difficult/impossible that is to accomplish completely. There are remnants of other internet programs, her access to Internet Explorer does not work. So I figure a clean start is the path of least resistance. Once I format and reinstall the base operating system, I thought I'd substitute AVG for Norton.
I started using AVG from the 7.0 days, and notice that now that it is up to 8.0, it has become somewhat of a resource hog too.
Would you folks recommend it, maybe an earlier version, or is there something even smaller and simpler considering her modest computing power?
Keep in mind that she'll be using Win98SE.
    Thanks.

You could try the free version of Avast. According to the site, the system requirements are: "For a computer running Windows® 95/98/Me: 486 Processor, 32MB RAM and 50MB of free hard disk space." For more info and the download, check here.

I tried to install AVG 8 and it will not install on 98SE. On my 2000 system I am still using 7.5 version. I know they said they were not going to make updates for it near the end of June anymore. So far I don't know for how long it's going to last but when I click on update there are new updates. It is hard to find a anti-virus program that works with 98SE. When I can not get new updates I am going to try Avast. That's the one Mike told you about.
