    Hi All,

I'm having a weird problem with my Wireless Connection.

I have an Speedstream Router configured to create a Wireless Network. Any laptop I use works fine in terms of picking up the network and connecting anywhere in my home.

But when I try to use a HP Compaq Nx9010 Laptop with a Wireless Card [Dlink WUA-1340], I get the following results:

Right next to the Router, I get excellent Signal [54MBPS] and it connects fine. When I move away, even to the next room, signal drops and I still see the network. But I cannot connect and the Windows Wireless Network Manager isn't helpful in terms of describing what the error is. I have also tried the DLink WNA Card and same problem.

Any ideas? Note that the notebook is on Windows XP and SP2.

    Kind regards,
    Kumaren

You mention Windows Wireless Manager and I wonder if you using the adapter's software to connect or Windows?

You could use the HP/Compaq software and disable Windows software. Go to Wireless Zero Configuration in Administration Tools > Services then if Stop is there, click it and then change Startup to Disabled.

It's best to never use manufacturer wifi connection software in XP and below. Windows WZC is far better, more stable and reliable.

    Possible causes of lost connections:

    1. stone, brick or cinder block wall between rooms prevents penetrating signal.

    2. interference on the wifi channel, change AP to use channel 1 or channel 11.

    3. misconfigured settings in the adapter Properties dialog. Device Manager > rt click wifi adapter > select Properties.

    4. access point (speedstream) on the floor and/or antennas folded downward. Position speedstream up on a shelf, unobstructed and point antennas upward. AP should NOT be near other wifi devices such as cordless phones, baby monitors; and should also not be near speakers or other electronics as they have electro magnetic fields that interfere with wifi signals.

    Both utilities indicate no connection

Hi. Since both utilities can see the network but cannot connect, should I still disable either?

    Other laptops work fine

    Hi,

If there was any obstruction, wouldn't all other laptops have the same problem? I'm sure that there is something wrong in the settings but I'm not certain what they should be. It seems as if the laptop itself might be a piece of junk i.e. a defective motherboard.

change the channel from the default 6 to anything else
channels 1 and 11 are first picks as they are distinct non overlapping channels
Neighbors signals can drift in long distances out of nowhere
You will get a good signal strength from your router but no internet connection ( sound familiar)
Change the ssid if it is on the factory default - even if only to add a digit
    Turn on encryption
Make sure router is high and uncluttered
for example not under a desk in a basement

Tried another USB port and it works in a fashion

    Hi,

I switched the USB port and it seems to be working albeit slowly.

    Thanks for the help.
