Why map the C drive on my 2 peer network if I cannot use the Programs....Most Pgms will not open or work on my server....

I thought when the drivwe was mapped you were operating from that drive unlike sharing a folder or a drive ....

    Any advice would be appreciated...

Why Map? For convienence mostly. Quicker to get to a network share you use frequently. And there are some (mostly older) programs that won't deal with UNC network addresses and will only run from a shortcut if a drive letter is used.

As for the rest, most programs these days, unless specifically designed to run from a network location need entries in your local registry. And/or need local .dll files to run. Neither of these requirements is met by a program installed on another machine.

    MAPPING

So is there anyway I could copy my peers registry to mine and run PGMs from that PC. This sounds like a definite no but a valid question, or would it completely mess things up? Seem s impossible because then it would be running on the other machine registry and my pgms would therefore not work....Just a thought....I see why they have the licenses now...

Sure seems like you could run a comparison on the 2 registries and copy only what you need though....

    Hmmm whatta ya think NEWT????

The problem is only partly the registry. The biggest problem is that when programs are installed there are files added to your windows directories that are needed for the program to run. There could be only one or two files to dozens of files involved, depends on the program.

Copying the registry is definately not a good idea because the registry also contains driver information amongst other things and could totally mess things up. :(

If a program won't run from a network share, you have only one or maybe two options.

Lots of business programs will sell you a stand-alone version for one price or a network-aware version (extra code to allow this) for a somewhat higher price.

If you have 2K/XP or a remote-control program like PC Anywhere, NetOp, etc., you can probably remote-control the other PC and run the program from your remote session since all the code will be executing on the remote PC.

As to the other, as KevinSaul said, DON'T. Unless you really enjoy a format c: and reinstall your OS.

And you might want to tweak your "experience" listing a little. CompTIA offers Network+ and I-Net+ but I don't think anyone has a cert called Net+

    Well thanks...

    Fellas,

These are all things I new but was making sure I would never change the registry...And when I do I always have a backup...I really was just trying to push the boundaries and understand why if I have mapped the drive why I cant use every Pgm on that PC and the answers seem to elude us. This mapped drive is a virtual drive right? Like a logical drive? Then if that is the case I should be able to use the pgms.....

This is not that important but Im a problem solver and I like to make things do what people say they cant...In a network environment this does not even matter. Most networks have pgms that are designed to be shared or multiple licenses....

And NEWT I see what your saying about the NET+. I was just shortning it up...But I guess for the 5Gs I spent I should make it long as possible aay? LOL

If you com up with anymore Ideas lemme know ok?

    Thanks

Yup - for that kind of money, make em long. :D

Although the one I could never get would be the short one. I am somewhere between hopeless and dangerous with hardware.

Philip Morris - the plant in Concord, NC. Contractor rather than PM employee though, darn it. PM pays better. :(
