I want to add a (Vista Home Premium) laptop to the home network.

When I click Network from my desktop computer and the screen loads I can see the laptop with the other computers, but I don't know the username and password.

Is there a standard log in with Vista (similar to say, Linksys routers) or is this something that was set by the guy who set it up?

Try going to Help and Support, type "Networking home computers" in the search box. You will see "Networking home computers running different versions of Windows ". Run through the suggestions there. The "password protected sharing" section may be what you are looking for.

    Hi,

As I had the same thing I contacted Microsoft about it and got the suggestion that helped:

Enter a Guest account for every shared directory/folder.

In my case I can now freely access this laptop's files from my desktop running XP.

    Hope it works for you.
