strange one here. clients machine when it gets to the profile button immediately says saving settings and then says logging off. no matter what menu option i choose safe mode, last known good, command prompt all the same. goes to where i click on profile then immediately says logging off and takes back to profile button. have run spinrite to check the drive have run chkdsk /r still the same.

    any thoughts would be appreciated...greg

    Hi Greg

Sounds like you have a damaged profile.

Hopefully not, but is it "the" Administrator profile? Is there more than 1 profile that can be selected?

    What OS?

    Hi Greg

    Pete ?
OK Greg reboot and when it gets to the logon screen: do ctrl-alt-del (twice).

It should now give you a manual logon screen where you can manually type in a username and password. Try any other username that you know has an account that you know the password. Likely will not work but try Administrator with no password!

When you boot to safe mode does the user screen present the Administrator Icon?

If not do the above ctrl-alt-del here and type in Administrator and no password also?

    Mike

Assumed you were querying XP/2k/Vista rather than SP1-3 or Home vs Pro vs Media Centre :)

petec - xp home edition sp2

mflynn - tried and it does come up with manual login but when i type the user id in it does the samething. pops right back to the profile icon and then again says loading profile setting then logs right off. admin give a privlidge error and wont do anything.

Yes, in safe mode the admin profile is along with the normal user. Only one user defined on the machine. Guess maybe i should install a back door on these machines when i configure them. these are dell systems.

Beginning to look like i might have to attach the drive to one of my other machine to get the data and rebuild - huh.

So can you login in safe mode?

If yes, have a look at this regisry key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion \ Winlogon

The Userinit string value in the right pane should be:

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,

arie - nope couldnt get into the system no matter what i tried. not safe mode not manual login kept returning me to the profile login icon.

i bit the bullet and rebuilt the machine and what i found when i attached to one of my other machines and retrieved the data was in the mydocuments folder for the user. every variable from device manager and i mean everything was detailed as a document in docs folder. never seen anything like that before plus some of the programs i saw struck me really strange. my guess is he did went to some bad sites even with site advisor installed and other safe guards and ignored those message not to go there. my clients do that all the time. rebuildt machine now working just fine.

    thanks all....greg
