I have a 3 year old Toshiba notebook. I am travelling and at a particular establishment I have been connecting with no problems to a wifi network using an 8-character key given to me by the owner. When I try to connect, I get the message that a WPA network key is required, and when I enter the 8 characters, I connect immediately. My wife has a 6 year old Toshiba notebook. When she tries to connect to the same network, she gets the same message that a network key is required. However, when she types in the same key that I successfully use, she gets the message that the key must be 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters.

Can anyone suggest how we can convince her notebook that an 8-character key is all that the network requires?

    Thanks.

Sounds like your Wife's computer doesn't support WPA encryption.

Is this an age-related thing (the computer's, not my wife's)? Is it likely that an updated driver could solve the problem, if available?

    Made me smile.. :)

On topic: from what I read here and there, the wirelesscard in that notebook does not support WPA or WPA2, just WEP.
