    Hi all
    Iam back, I know.

So, my problem is these dcom error are slowing down my shutdown. When I click start/turn off computer it takes about 3 mins for that second screen to pop up. The one with standby/shutdown/restart. Then another 3 mins for it to turn off.

This all started happening when I bought a 500 gig external HD for backups. Its a seagate and came with some software called memeo (I think) Didn't like it so I reformated the external drive and installed Acronis True Image.
And so ever since June 16 I have had these DCOM errors. I followed the instrutions from the help and support through MS but can't figure out the program vendor, CAuto Update Class 1.0.

    Win XP sp2

    Anybody have some ideas?
    Thanks
    H

I have. And I saw the hotfix at microsoft. But, as far as I can tell it applies to windows server 2003. As does most of the other articles.

If I can narrow down the program and then I could disable it or set it to manual run.

Is there any additional information in the Event Logs?

    Hi Arie
Thanks for getting back to me.

I reinstalled Acronis true image. Now instead of 1 dcom error Iam getting 3.
I can't remember if I had to install net frame work from MS, on that very first install, so I could use acronis.
I have upgraded to the latest build of acronis. No effect.
Safe mode works like normal. and safe mode with networking works like normal. Those are the only errors in event log.

I have followed the instructions to dig through the registry to determine the program vendor of (CAuto Update Class 1.0.) but couldn't locate it once I got to the part about going to your start/programs.

    Just found this: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=47229
I may try the above when I get home from work. Arie would it be safe from me to try that?

and this but I don't have any HP stuff. Home built comp

Yes, it should be fine to do. It's just re-registering Automatic Updates.

As you said, those GUID's point to CAutoUpdate Class 1.0.

    Boy, am I getting frustrated!
So, I ran that script from the other post. It would work for the first 5 mins or so but then after an hour it would revert back to super slow shutdown.

So since it seems to be related to the auto update I turned that to manual in admin tools/services/auto update. Just checked it and it looks like it reverted back to automatic. Does anyone know if when I restart will it revert back to automatic and if so, is there another service I should disable or set to manual?

Iam wondering if SP3 might help me?

    Hi Hill

It is usually not a good idea to do a major update like SP3 in hopes it will correct a problem.

The problem may cause SP3 to go out to left field and get you in worse trouble.

OK for your issue lets shoot it with a shotgun of multiple possible fixes.

    Begin..

In services stop and disable all of the below just to get them out of the way for now for trouble shooting purposes.

Nothing is un-installed or deleted only disabled from running!

They can be put back anytime later but I would not, as none of them are needed by most home users and very few business users. Basically stuff M$ thought you should have.

Disabled uses no memory (RAM) and no CPU cycles.
Manual uses the RAM but a small amount of CPU.
Auto and not started they use even more RAM and CPU.
Auto and started even more RAM and CPU ..

Now in this case we disabling for trouble shooting purposes. But when we finish if you leave them all off until it is noticed that you need one (not likely for 99%) then it can be enabled.

Leaving these all off, then becomes a performance tweak/boost as they free some RAM and CPU cycles! Special note. If you are going to pick and choose then be aware that the small amount of RAM and CPU cycles of each one individually is not significant but as a group it is! So if you need most of them (or just think you do because you don't) then just as well enable them all)!

    DNS Client
    Fast User switching
    Indexing service
    Messenger
    Net logon
    Net.TCP Port Sharing
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    IPsec services
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Registry
    Uninterruptable power supply
    Universal Plug and play
    Web Client
    Windows media player Network Sharing

IF you are using a wired network card and "NOT" using wireless on this computer then you can
    also disable

    Wireless Zero configuration

This is only used on computers with a wireless NIC like a Laptop. Do not disable Wireless Zero configuration on a Laptop. Has nothing to do with other wireless hardware like wireless routers etc.

In short if this computer has a CAT 5 or 6 cable and no ability to connect wirelessly if that cable is unplugged, then you can disable Wireless Zero configuration.

This is not to be confused with Wired Auto Config do not disable that!

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall BITS

    Repair Permissions

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Get back to us.

    Hi mflynn

So, I turned off Automatic updates through control panel/automatic updates. Seems to have worked. Setting auto updates under admin tools/services to manual or disabled would restart after comp was rebooted.

My wife is in the middle of doing school work and the such so was I can get on the comp for an extend period I'll give those suggestions a go. Thanks a bunch mflynn. Hopefully it will work. Would hate to miss important updates.

    Thanks all

    Extended period?

The procedure may look complex because of the details I posted.

But the entire time to do the entire post should only be about 6-7 minutes.
