I am rather certain that this problem is not a virus or other bug, but rather new software that has left an undesirable trail.

Starting today, and I don’t know what was different about today, when I reboot (as I do every two or three days), I get reminders to register the new Creative Zen MP3 player I bought a couple of weeks ago. I installed some of the included software, and elected not to register it at the time, and everything ran fine until today.

What happens now is that I cannot cancel the Creative reminder to register, it continues to pop up, and for some reason a Turbo Tax installer also starts running! I ran Turbo Tax and was done with it back in March, and never saw it or heard from it until now! I have been using Turbo Tax for many years and never had any problems.

If I press Ctrl-Alt-Del and try to stop the Creative Product Registration task, the continuous stream of registration notices start together with the Turbo Tax notices. If I leave it alone, I can run the computer fine, as I am now doing, but I have the Creative tab displayed at the bottom of the screen

What can I do to stop these annoying notices?

    Thanks!

    Alex

The registration popup is either a separate program or is hard coded into an already running program. If it's a separate program then it's loading from the registry or the startup folder. Look at Start > Programs > Startup and delete the shortcut if there. And also look in Start > Run > Regedit > HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current version/Run and it there delete the value.

Use Task Manager to determine the name of the popup reminder process.

What happens if you complete the registration?

Was not able to find the programs to delete them, so I started to proceed with the registration (good hint) to see how far I needed to go. As it turned out, the device (ZEN MP3) needed to be plugged in and turned on for the registration process. After that, I was able to cancel it or put it off for a later date.

    Thanks!
