I have an a-open 8X8 DVD Dual AAN drive that is give me a hard time. Sometimes the drive isn't recognized as being installed. When this happens the drive does not show when I click on MY COMPUTER. If I put a disk in the drive autorun doesn't. If a disk is already in the drive you can't read it... the drive doesn't exist for all intent and purpose.

Then, I open CONTROL PANEL, select add hardware, indicate the hardware is already installed, scroll to the a-open drive and tell the computer to install it and the response is "the drive is already installed and working properly." Sure enough, after this little rigmarole it works just fine.

If I look at the DEVICE MANAGER when the drive is in invisible mode it indicates the drive is working properly.

I have checked the connections. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times. I've checked for the latest drivers. Nothing eye opening in this arena.

The only thing that I can think of that MAY be affecting this drive is I use the standby mode quite often. I have another DVD drive (ASUS) that hasn't caught the bug from the A-open.

    Running with Windows XP...

    Anyone have any suggestions

Standby mode is a possible ....

If both the drives are on the same cable I would try switching them around, remembering to jumper the drives accordingly so that the master is at the end of the cable.

If they are both set to cable select set them to master/slave and test.

Look for updated drivers for the IDE Controllers. They might be combined with the motherboard chipset drivers or listed separately, but get the chipset drivers anyway.

You can uninstall the drives and IDE Controller drivers in Device Manager in an attempt to "reset" them. They will be automatically reinstalled when you reboot.
