My wife and I just received our new desktop with flat, wide screen (20 inch) monitor from Dell. I'm wondering what the recommended resolution is for this type of monitor. Neither my wife nor I have vision issues. Right now the factory setting is 1024 x 768 pixels. My feeling is that this is too large (when the sidebar on our browser is open, the window showing must use a horizontal scroll bar). It seems to me a setting like 1280 x 1024 would be more appropriate. I need some recommendations or is this purely a personal thing?

    Hi James

The correct ClearType and Hertz makes a lot of difference.

Your monitor and Video card must have the same possibilities. If monitor can do 85 hertz (for a particular screen size) but Video card can not then you are limited to the lowest common number.

Once you have the Display properties up click appearence!

Click Effects I ususlly disable Fade effect as it is a slow down and I never even noticed it anyway!

    Then enable Clear type.

Then click settings then Advanced then Adapter then "List all modes" then choose the resolution size you want, True Color (32bit) with the highest Hertz possible for that screen size.

    LCD screens and Native setting.
Note difference when monitor is "Widescreen "

    Native Resolutions

For most monitors / graphics cards choose 32 bit color.
Run the highest "Hertz value" (refresh rate) allowed by your monitor

Follow the recommendations provided by the manufacturer / model for your LCD monitor.

Apparently 1680 x 1050 since that's as far as she goes.

1680 X 1050 is Native for 22" Wide I have found like on mine that the Monitor is set for 59 or 60 Htz automatically. That being LCD, CRT would be 75 to 85 Htz to eliminate flicker.
