I'm not sure if I have some type of malware on this machine or not, but it sure acts like it. I uninstalled AdawareSE and AVG 7.5 (I used the last install file for AVG that I had to do the uninstall) and installed MalwareBytes Anti-malware and Avira Anti-virus. I noticed a severe system slow down once everything was unistalled/reinstalled. The cpu is constantly at 100%, looking at running processes it shows svchost.exe using all the cpu, user name is system. I've scanned with Spybot, Malwarebytes and Avira and they find nothing. When I end the process that is using the cpu, it doesn't seem to have any ill effects on the system. When I reboot, it's back using cpu again. I'm listing the HJT log just in case, as I'm not sure what's going on here.

Open a command window and type the following command then hit enter.

    tasklist /svc

Now open Task Manager and identify the PID of the svchost process consuming the cpu, match it with the output in the command window and let me know which services are associated with that process.

    Dave,

Forgive my ignorance, but I wasn't able to determine which svchost entry was the culprit. I'm attaching a jpg file of task manager and a text file with the tasklist cmd prompt output. Hopefully you will be able to tell which one it is.

You need the PID to show in Task Manager.
While on the Processes tab, click View>Select Columns
Select PID (Process Identifier) then OK

    Dave,

Sorry to be so long posting back, have been on the road a lot for work. I'm not sure what was going on, but it seems to be all better now. Everything is behaving as it should. Chalk it up to gremlins I guess.

    Hi Dave,

I thought I'd post back to this thread with an update. Since my last post, the problem resurfaced again. Using the task manager and the task list command you provided, I was able to determine that it was an HP Printer service that was causing the high cpu (HPSLPSVC). A search turned up this forum link with a lengthy discussion of the problem.

    http://forums11.itrc.hp.com/service...47626+1218808260314+28353475&threadId=1177917

It seems a lot of HP users have had the same issue. I changed the HP Network Device Support service startup from automatic to manual as recommended by HP in the thread and it resolved the problem, at least for now.

Just wanted to post this in case someone else had the same problem.
