Computer Compaq laptop V4000. In recent weeks have completed a clean install of Win XP with SP3. About 1 in 4 times of start up am shown screen "checking the file system on C ".
Check is started and computer boots up OK. The check required so often is causing me concern I wonder is my H/D in trouble. Help will be appreciated. I am new member must say I am impressed by Forum and ease of posting.;)

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

When you did the clean install, did you install the drivers? Also check for updated drivers at HP/Compaq. Use this to identify your exact model number:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...3108&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=434623&os=228

You can go to My Computer, right-click on the "Hard Disk Drive, select Properties -> Tools tab -> Error Checking button. Check the boxes for Automatically fixing... and Test the drive surface. You will need to restart the computer to run it. It may take several hours. If it seems to "stall ", let it keep running, it is probably making repairs. Check what information is given when it completes.

    Thank you Mat
At same time of posting to BBS I requested help on Compaq email help system and to my amazement had a reply within hours. They had same remedy as you + a few more suggestions and when I applied all of these I am now up and running once again. If you or anyone else has same problem I will be happy to send the full "fix ". It is a bit long to quote here. Unless there is someone else in trouble.
I was always quite happy with Compaq but now I have seen how their free e-mail support works I am more than content. And of course I am very impressed with the speed of reply to this my first post and most of all the quality of the information. Please how do I close this posting as of course my problem is resolved.
    Thomas Armour:)
