I just recovered from a laborious and frightening experience after having used a Registry cleaning program. I wish not to name the program since in all likelihood I goofed up somehow in its application.

In Windows Live One Care-- Tuneup, the first task is called "Remove unnecessary files ". My question is "Does files include registry entries "?

Do I need a registry cleaning program?

Should not - there are no files in the registry as such.
No - the Registry should be left well alone unless you are requested by an experienced user to remove an entry to resolve a problem. Your computer will run no better by removing invalid entries or by compressing it.

Thanks Pete--It was as I suspected but never had any conformation. I should have posted this one long ago.
Want some irony: I had an Registry Cleaner advertisement pop up on the top of this very post.
