I seem to be having problems with my video and nothing i have tried has worked. whenever i try to play something new in windows media player it says "error downloading codec" it has never had this problem before and i don't recall changing anything to cause it.

i have tried to play the videos on other programs but they also don't work saying theres no video or some such.

i say whenever i play something new because everything else i have tried to play that i have not recently downloaded works just fine.

i have tried downloaded from other sources and such and i think the problem is how I'm downloading it somehow.

I am stumped as to what to do.i have tried downloading new codecs and even reinstalling and still no luck.

any help i can get would be great. thanks for your time

    Hi, AdmSirRed. :)

What version and service pack of Windows XP?

What version of Windows Media Player (WMP)?

Are you certain the video files you download are coming from reputable sources?

Please provide a few URLs for files you have downloaded that produce the "error downloading codec" you mentioned.

(I'm assuming you're first downloading the files and then playing them with WMP.)

I am using service pack 2.

they are coming from good sources, i have never had a problem with them before until now and the ones i have gotten previously still work just fine.

    I'm using WMP 10

i get a lot of my stuff downloaded through BitTornado from

    http://isohunt.com/torrents/?ihq=naruto
    http://dattebayo.com/t/

also tried direct download from a few sites that ive never had a problem with. and still they did not work.

Edit: and yes I'm downloading them and then im playing them on WMP

And you will find a lot of fake video files there. Downloading files from unknown sources is not a good idea.

I looked at the link you provided and those files are .avi, I would go to Divx and download their player and codec. If divx cannot play an .avi file its definately a fake.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "fake "? because it all seems right it has sound and all, just no video

also DivX wont play the files saying there is no video.

first check your Video file for if it's not under DRM Protect ( Media Player ---> properties ---> Media Usage Right )

in the next step u can install "VistaCodecs" Pack,it's free & for on both Vista & Xp just google it,this package support many file types for Windows Media Player (even all avi,Flash Movies (flv) , mp4 , ra & ... )

& there is something else, may be your file has damaged during downloading ( some lost pockets) you can check it with media player classic 6.0 ( google it , u can find it spreat or with K-Lite pack ) in the next step .

    i hope this work :)

I'd also recommend Vista Codec package. The latest is version 4.7.0. Uninstall any previous Audio/Video codecs you have installed first, and note the proceedure at the beginning of the install if you have RealPlayer installed.

This package solved my issues, and unlike the K-Lite codecs, Vista Codec install was totally auto. No options to ponder!

    Hi AdmSirRed,
Just a word of caution. There's many of these torrent movies that that will ask you to download a special player or a special uncommon codec in order to play your movie. These are, most often, virus or trojan loaders and will infect your computer. If it doesn't play with mediaplayers codecs or divx/xvid like the ones that are installed with the vista or klite packages, I would be very suspicious. If in doubt Google the player or codec name, your told you need. If it's one of the bad ones it will show up on googles hit list. Be very very careful.

AdmSirRed, I'm sorry. I don't use P2P (definition) file sharing software (Wikipedia information) and I am not about to start doing so to investigate this issue. I would say you cannot be certain your P2P download sources are reputable (unless one can configure a P2P application to download only from specific reputable sources).

isohunt.com is currently listed in the hpHosts database (though the classification is "Not Specified "). That means (to me) isohunt.com likely is (or at least was), in some way, associated with the "shady" (disreputable) side of the Internet.

dattebayo.com is not currently listed in hpHosts. McAfee's SiteAdvisor currently has a "green" rating for the site. However, the SiteAdvisor report for dattebayo.com currently shows dattebayo.com was linked to a "red" (reportedly dangerous) site (gnaa.us, apparently based in Japan) when SiteAdvisor visited dattebayo.com.

IMHO, Ranger SVO's and goddez1's cautions should be well taken. At the very least, you should scan every downloaded file (for malware) with several reputable anti-virus and several reputable anti-spyware applications, and fully investigate every file you obtain before you try playing/viewing/executing those files.

Malware authors might use P2P torrents for distributing freshly made malware that's not yet detected by many anti-malware applications. Be VERY careful or we might see one of your discussion threads in our Removing Spyware & Viruses forum.

It's also possible that a firewall is disallowing the codec downloads.

I'm currently trying to install the vista codecs package listed earlier.

it says uninstall all codec related installations. what exactly does this mean?

do i have to uninstall all my other codecs? or just ones for windows media player? *i have a few different players*

*Side note, what affect may this have on videos that are not having any problems playing?
    also

I have gone through a few things so ill start with the simple ones.

Firewall does not seem to be a problem.

I have used Isohunt for quite a wile now and am familiar with the downsides to it. however i do make sure to check what i download and have never had a problem with it. So i do not think this is the case, i have not seen any kind of effect on my computer that would indicate malware that my scans have not caught.

also to help with the sources i have had the same problem with it not playing the video when it was downloaded from.

    http://www.naruto-kun.com

I have also seen the videos that ask to download a specific player and know to avoid those. so this is not a factor to what seems to be wrong. and thanks for the warning.

ok, i got it installed the videos and everything work... kinda, the new problem is there is a delay, the video/ sound is not in sync anymore on anything i got. through any media player.

Ok after a few minor adjustments everything seems to be working properly, there seems to be no more problems at all!

i would like to thank you all once again for all your help and advice!

    Hi

This easiest way to play everything you download is to use VideoLan media player instead. This comes with all the codecs you'll need for most videos.

    Just go to www.videolan.org

    Hope this will help you.

your video player is not processing video as fast as audio. From what I've seen, this usually happens with videos of large resolution. Try change a video player if it is an AVI file. Videolan and DivX are the best ones. I'm not sure but it also might help to get a better video card for your PC.
