any help here would be huge . . . . i'm totally stuck and going crazy.

unfortunately i had to clean-reinstall W2KPro on my
    6-month old P4 1.6MHz box -- which was running
    just fine with SP2.

completely reformatted/partitioned the HDrive, and now
cannot install either SP2 or 3. now after installing either SP i get
the following stop error every time after reboot:

    0x0000001E (0xC0000005,0x80455C1C, 0x00000001, 0x00000470)
    K_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
    Address 80455C1C base at 80400000, DateStamp 3ad7ad60 -
    ntoskrnl.exe

after this error i cannot run in safe mode, revert
to "last known good" or even get into the recovery
console. just have to start bloody over.

base WK2 Pro installs fine, but i CANNOT bring it up to
    either ServicePak.

the hardware config has not changed: in addition to the
built-ins on the motherboard (soyo dragon ultra) only running
an AGP nVidia 256 and one SCSI card for a zip drive. 2 x 256 DDR 2700 memory.

i've searched the microsoft knowledgebase extensively and found articles
about various stop errors, but they all
    point to hardware/driver conflicts, which i don't
understand since i have not altered the hardware and was
    running well before.

any ideas? and, again, many thanks in advance.

Have you tried getting the latest drivers for all your installed hardware? Video especially.

    stop errors/video drivers

i've always loaded the nVidia drivers after installing the OS and SPaks -- nVidia provides an exectuable that loads the driver as well as display utilities.

microsoft default VGA drivers have alwasy been fine through the install process, so i can't quite understand why the difference now.

if it's video, perhaps i should just try another card?

but if you have any more info about why or in what situations windows sees the hardware as incompatible it would be helpful.

    thanks.

You've maybe already seen it but Q275678 How to Troubleshoot a STOP 0x0000001E KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Error Message may be of some help. You should be able to use info and links from there to figure out exactly which piece of hardware is giving problems.

Otherwise the best suggestion I can make is to remove all possible hardware both from device manager and physically and give it another try. I think were it me I'd also try a reformat and reload of the OS with the hardware out. Then load SP3 (no need for SP2) and see if it will take.

As to possible causes when it worked before - tough question. Possibly a memory stick failed. Possibly you had a marginal connection with a piece of hardware that worked but with the new install, didn't set up correctly. Who knows.
