We just got new PCs at work running Windows Vista. These computer have 2000 MB of RAM but they are slower than whiz and constantly freeze for like 10 seconds when trying to do simple tasks like pulling up JPGs and bitmap files in the preview window.

They also give the "Program not responding" error.

You would think as Windows evolves it would get better not worse.

I hope Vista is not another Windows ME edition. That version has to be the worst Windows version of all time. It ran slower than XP.

Seems to me the only advantage of XP over 98 SE is you can stick a USB memory stick in the USB port and it recognizes it with no problems.

Your comments sound similar to me a year ago. But nowadays the new PC should not have such worse situation as you described. Can you state the hardware configuration of your 'new" PCs please? Please also state the edition of your Windows Vista.

If your new PC are business machines, not strong in graphics and you're installing Windows Home Premium or Windows Ultimate, you're likely hit by the problems you described. It's rare to say 2000 MB now. Say 2GB instead.

Scan through the other threads in Windowsbbs.com. There are many solutions or realities to your problems.

I don't have any control over the computers at work due to lack of adminstrative privileages. They even have more filters on internet sites than the Chineese government does on their citizens!

I work at a chemical plant (not in an office) and don't have a dedicated computer. So depending upon where I'm working I could be using one of 20 computers.

These are running Windows Vista Enterprise, Intex 3 GHz, and 2 GB. Windows is calling it 2002 MB, that's what made me called it but I know what you mean.

Another bug I noticed. I saved all my icons in a folder and stored it on my companies "X drive ". Today I was copying some old icons over to the computer I'm using today and I can't drag and drop icons from a folder to the desktop without the computer freezing like I could with XP. Instead I have to right click and copy and paste, otherwise the folder stops responding.

Allot of bugs in Access as well. I can't enter my lab data like I could with XP.

the IT guy's going to have to fix this.

My poor boy! Learn to be patient. The good days shall come.

If you have troubles using drag and drop. Try using Ctrl-X and Ctrl-V. They are equally good but faster in lower-end computers. Besides, press Start, right-click Computer and choose Properties and see what processor and speed that your computer got. And go into Task Manager and see which process has taken up most of your processing power. Sometimes it's the IE, or a remaining Outlook process may be the memory killer. Talk to your technical guys and see if they have any clue.

If you've got a chance to visit China (it's good time at Olympic Games in Beijing), try surfing Internet. My experience is not bad. I have no problem accessing the sites for my work and entertainment. It seems that you're not yet updated on the changes in recent years. In Australia, the government wants to block some websites but the ISPs say they have no such resources. Considering 20 million people in Australia with low Internet penetration vs 1.5 billion people in China, I don't believe the Chinese government has the capability to block websites on an extensive scale. The only country that I heard of, scanning and keeping every Internet traffic is USA.

Obviously, from what you said, there is at least one layer of administration between you the user and the computer manufacturer. So, don't be too quick to fault Vista for your problems.

I have two Vista machines, one Business, one Home Premium, with 2 gigs DRAM and 2.5 gig processors. They are great, no problems.

The computer guy fixed the problems dragging and dropping problem. It seemed to have something to do with the macros being turned off.

Vista is still giving everyone a fit. I'm sure the bugs will be worked out eventually. One bug at a time.

    Good to hear that.

By the way, check your Vista and make sure it's updated or will be updated to SP1. There's a significant improvement.

Windows Vista architecture is wrong, but we have to live with it. The next version, Windows 7, will be even worse. Microsoft recruitment strategy is wrong. They look at current experience (3-5 years at most) and ignore the painful experience gained from those who has accumulated experience since 80s. Now Microsoft is repeating the problems during the last 20-30 years, again and again.

Can you imagine a Security Centre in Windows Vista has nothing to do with the security of USB and e-SATA?

The Citrix and server pool are such old technologies with new codes in new brand and new problems, and not comparable with the performance and simplicity of mainframe terminals. In the nineties, the code generators are excellent in producing business results, i.e. the aligned technology with business goals. Now, have you seen any AJAX code generators? AJAX programmers are working in the stone age like the COBOL programmers in the 60s. What is the .NET alignment to business? I asked 20 web 2.0 programmers and none of them know the business alignment characteristics of Web 2.0. The IT industry is sick. It is very busy at replacing itself, but not accumulating its wealth. Have you heard of a CPA 2.0? CPA is CPA! How come the ITIL certification gets into version 2? While other industries talk about years of post-qualification, IT talks about "current" qualification, say MCSE 2003. IT people spent too much time in renewing their certifications. HR people are lazy and lack of vision. They qualify candidates by a checklist of what they got, and handicapped in measuring the complexity of IT people's experience in the past. But this is the problem of S.M.A.R.T. methodology. Quality has nothing to do with grade. Thus outsourcing has so many problems. But you cannot blame the recruitment agencies who hire backpackers (with good spoken native-like English as the essential condition), who scrutinize non-native-English-speakers and follow a quality checklist. The product life cycle has been too short so Six Sigma doesn't work at all in continuous quality improvement because every new products start the design from scratch, without referring to the faults of a prior model.

Why Wii is so popular now? Because it concentrates on the business, which is enjoyability. Wii does not pursue complicated graphics, speed and etc. Tell me if your resume cannot be reproduced by an ancient word processor prior to Microsoft Word 1.0? Even Word Perfect, Multimate, or Wang Word Processor is working as good as Microsoft Word 2007. Do you see what go wrong of the IT industry?

Your company is brave in working on Vista, while there are still over 80% of big companies cling on XP. Most SME companies are still running XP on their desktop.

Your voice / complaints must be heard by your IT department and business management. The IT strategy may need a re-think.

(personally, I am using Microsoft Vista Home Premium, for the sake of having a sense of what's going on. To me, Windows Vista is not better than Windows 3.11. The rest versions are increasing maturity only.)
