    Hi All,

I am trying to find a replacement for Ad-Aware for a Win98 system. Since the current version is losing support soon and the new version does not work with 98, I need something to replace it. Any suggestions on a good, and free, replacement? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Thanks Pete. I'll pass on the info to my friend. I have both Ad-Aware and Spybot on one of my XP systems. Are you saying I don't need both? Is one just as good as the other?

In some respects Spybot is better than AdAware in that it has the immunize function and a custom Hosts file if required. All antispyware software is dependant on the definitions provided and it is inevitable that one will find the odd bit of spyware that the other doesn't and vice versa.

SpywareBlaster is an ideal companion to Spybot and is also compatible with W98. Not a scanner, but provides permanent protection against spyware listed in the def. files.

Thanks Pete. With my kids using one of my XP systems, I have all three of those programs installed. Together with the AV software, there has been no problems.

    smokinjoe,

Thanks for the link. I will pass on the info to my friend and see if they want to do the manual downloads.

Mike, what may happen is that after the .def file is downloaded and copied into the folder, when the program is started, it will give an error something like "def file not loaded ", etc. When this happens, just hit the "check for updates now" button and it will auto-download the new .def file.

    Weird, but it works.

Thanks. I haven't heard back if they want to do the manual downloads, but I'll forward the install tip to them.
