I've read some information on dual booting.

    I have a XP machine.

If I take a spare HD and load Win 98 on it (using a spare PC etc) and then plug that HD into my XP machine (as drive d,e,f whatever) --- Will I then be able to dual boot?

    Not likely dude

Installing win98 on hard drive from another box will set the mainboard resourses for THAT mobo, & when you attempt to use on YOUR box all sorts of errors will likely happen

Of course! I been there before. Forgot.

What about this. I take out my XP HD and stick the blank HD in. Use a Win98 boot disk and then load Win98.

Now what would happen if I put the XP HD back in as c and moved the win98 HD to d?

Bottom-line I don't want to do the partitioning and re-load of WIN XP if I can avoid it.

    Now yer kewl

Everything will setup on the new hard drive as win98. Cavet? When you re-install your old winxp drive back make sure it's on primary master first IDE. Ya mite want to put the win98 drive on as primary master on second IDE just so it runs fast as poss. Now the cavet: You will need a boot manager 3rd party like PQbootmagic or system commander.

Rancher - He won't even need any 3rd party software. Xp is like a plague to O/S's on other drives and it will want to act as the boot loader for all.

The settings can be found under SYSTEM PROPERTIES > ADVANCED > STARTUP AND RECOVERY / SETTINGS > DEFAULT OPERATING SYSTEM

    See also Technet Q289022

There is also a way to have it detect it, but I don't recall, but I do know that if the "repair" install function is used it will add that W98 to the boot loader.
