    Not sure if I am posting in the right place, but need advice on speeding up my laptop. I have enclosed a ridiculous amount of info if you can help. I have already turned off everything I feel is safe to per some other posts on your site pertaining to this subject. Nothing bad is showing up when I do AVG's virus scan & spyware. Can you help?

    (Something strange happened when I ran Deckard's...the taskbar changed its appearance and I can't get it back. Also, saved to restore before I did Deckard and when I tried to go back the restore had been turned off. I turned it back on several times. Each time I go back it has turned off again.???

    Thought I would add that defragging took 5 hours today. Doing a virus scan can take all day and into the night!

    Just doing this post was slow as I was changing windows to pull up Deckard's results to copy and paste!

    Thanks for taking a look.

    Hi, T&S (Josh?). :)

    Malware may sometimes be responsible for turning off System Restore against one's wishes. Your AVG antivirus/antispyware might not have detected such malware. I suggest running a Kaspersky online scan to see whether it might detect something or not.

    Please describe how the Task Bar appears compared to how it used to appear. If describing with words is difficult, then perhaps you can post a link to a screenshot that shows how the Task Bar appears.

    ==========

    You might want to experiment with increasing/setting the size of your Paging File (rather than having Windows dynamically manage the Paging File).

    To increase/set the size of the Pagefile.sys file:
    1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
      (Alternatively, hold down the Windows key tap the Pause/Break key, and then release the Windows key.)
      This will open the "System Properties" window.
    2. Click the Advanced tab.
    3. In the "Performance" section, click the Settings button.
      This will open the "Performance Options" window.
    4. Click the Advanced tab.
    5. In the "Virtual Memory" section, click the Change button.
      This will open the "Virtual Memory" window.
    6. Click your C:\ drive (if necessary) so it is highlighted (because that is the drive you have Windows installed on).
    7. Select "Custom size:" radio button and set the initial size of the page file to be at least 1.5 times the amount of RAM installed in your computer. In your case, you might make your settings as follows.
      • Initial size (MB): 1536
      • Maximum size (MB): 2048
    8. Click the Set button.
    9. Click the OK button. (Keep OKing your way out.)
    10. When you're back to the main Desktop screen, restart your computer.
    If you want to set your Paging File to a static size of 2GB, then set as follows.
    • Initial size (MB): 2048
    • Maximum size (MB): 2048
    These settings should set your Paging File to a static size of 2 GB (which is 2 times the size of your installed 1GB RAM).

    ==========

    You have some installed applications with memory-resident background processes (that consume available RAM) you might deem unnecessary (WildTangent, for example). You might consider uninstalling those applications.

    Open Windows Task Manager to see how much RAM and CPU cycles certain processes are using.

    • Right-click an empty space on the Task Bar, and then click "Task Manager ".
    • Under the "Processes" tab, look in the "Mem Usage" and "Peak Mem Usage" columns for processes that are using large amounts of RAM.
      (Investigate with the "Pacman's Startups" and "AnswersThatWork" resources described/linked below to determine which processes/tasks you might deem unnecessary.)
    • Items in the "CPU" column indicate the percentages of CPU cycles certain processes are using at any given time. These might provide clues about what is causing your computer to run slow.

    HP printer software/drivers/processes sometimes have caused issues with my computer. Perhaps you can locate updates at the HP web site. Perhaps you can disable/uninstall certain components of your installed HP printer software you might deem unnecessary.

    ==========

    If you want to experiment with disabling unnecessary startups to improve your computer's performance, here are some links.

    Choose one of the following handy stand-alone utilities for controlling your startups. (You do not need to install the application.) I suggest you use one of these utilities instead of MSCONFIG to control your startups.

    CAUTION: Be certain you do not disable any necessary startups. See the references below for details that will help you decide what is reportedly safe to disable.

    Check out the following links to help you decide what startups you might want to disable.
    • Pacman's Startups - Contents: (I suggest you read this "Contents" page for background information.)

    Taskbar has reverted to the old classic style even though the new style is checked under taskbar appearance. (Should be green "bubble-like" start button with blue bar.)

    Not a big deal, I know, but it bugs me and makes me think something else might be going on.

    Update to my Slow PC Post

    Thought I would conclude the saga of the slow pc with the solution I found.

    http://winhlp.com/node/10

    This is the greatest thing since sliced bread! And I might add, the only thing I have ever found to speed up my pc. Also, fixed all the jerky problems with gaming and movies.

    Hope this helps someone else.

    Thanks for the update - that was a clever piece of sleuthing :)
