I used FF 3.0 RC2 for awhile and the help about listed uit as version 3.0.

    I installed FF3.0 final yesterday and the version is 3.0. How can I tell if I have 3.0 Final? The thing says "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0 "

Indeed. It's confusing since their release candidates did not indicate in the Help and about Firefox section that they were release candidates. Firefox 3 is a terrific browser and I highly commend all the hard work that went into developing it, but I'm not overly impressed with the manner in which it was released and with information that they assume should be general knowledge. Overall, Opera has a much better delivery method (and in some respects, a better browser).

    Hey James,

I tried Opera on two occasions including the latest (9.5?). I don't have them now because I couldn't see spending so much time trying to figure out how to use it.

I was confronted with a couple of blinking things that I think were downloads of some thing I didn't ask for. One of them was in the address bar and the other was on the toolbar somewhere-I don't remember exactly- at any rate I couldn't find where to turn them off.

I had read from Opera users how it had built in extensions but I reviewed them all and I don't use any one of the functions they add.

The bottom line is that I like FF and I am just too lazy to try to learn another browser. Until it does something wrong, I'm staying with it.

    Hi Bill,

With a clean install, this is what I see for Firefox 3.0 Final:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9) Gecko/2008052906 Firefox/3.0

So it would appear that you do have the official release of Firefox 3.0, if the above is what you see when you click on: Help | About Mozilla Firefox.

    Ramona,
Do we have to start over with FF3 or will my latest v2.0.0.14 be upgraded to FF3 by the usual upgrade method?
    Thanks.

    Bob,

My recommendation would be a clean install, it won't affect your Profile. You're moving to a new platform, from Version 2 to Version 3, and according to the Release Notes, installing 3 over 2, could cause the browser to become unstable.

This is a bug, which will be fixed in Version 2.0.0.15

As a rule of thumb, if I select Help|Check for updates, in 2.0.0.14 and it tells me that there is an update, and it is FF3.0, I would accept that. As of this morning there wasn't even an update from 3.0RC3.
So, if one does not want to wait, go the way that Ramona described.
At this point, I have 2.0.0.14, 3.0, and 3.1a1pre, all minding their business. The first two are installed, while I work from the unzipped file with the third. Each one uses a different profile.

I manually downloaded FF 3.0 then double clicked the FireFox Setup 3.0.exe file and it first warns that the old version will be un-installed and the new one installed, clicked ok and it did the rest without a hitch on two different computers (one XP and one Vista). Just be aware that not all extensions/add-ons will work at this time (until the authors have updated them) and the installation knows which ones won't and disables them automatically. I highly recommend FF 3.0

    I got it here-- http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/products/download.html?product=firefox-3.0&os=win&lang=en-US

FF 3.0 appears to be identical to 3.0RC3. I downloaded, and have been running, 3.0 since yesterday afternoon, and it appears to be quite stable.

Extensions, as usual, can be a problem, depending on those used. In many cases, extensions which worked perfectly well with 2.0.x won't work at all with 3.0, and haven't been upgraded yet. In other cases, there are upgrades which will work with both releases of FF, and in still others, there are upgrades which will work only with 3.0.

In short, I'm quite happy with 3.0 so far. Now, if I could only figure out how to get rid of all the extraneous stuff I don't need on the Bookmarks menu.

    JIm-
Did you use the installer version of FF3 or FF3RC3? or did you do your conversion trick?

Jim, you can have what you want in the personal bookmark folder. It is personal after all. Right click on the specific folder, and select Delete.

    Bob ...

You have to install FF before you can create the zipped version.

After I installed it I zipped the FF program folder, then ran RegSeeker to delete all Registry references to both Mozilla and Firefox. Because I had left the program folder intact, and hadn't touched the profile folder, all that was necessary was to start FF and make it the default browser. What is running now is, in effect, a zipped version of FF, and I have the zip file for future use.

    Westside ...

I think you misunderstood me. I don't want to get rid of any bookmarks ... I want to get rid of the (to me, useless) selections at the top of the Bookmarks menu, the ones outlined in the attached screenshot. All I want left are "Bookmark This Page" and "Organize Bookmarks ".

    Jim-
I understood exactly what you said but I wasn't sure you did the zip trick every time you installed it. So if you have the zip file, would you mind emailing it to me as an attachment? I think you have my email address?
    Thanks.

    Bob ...

You could do the same thing, you know. :)

The file is over 10,500KB, which is a bit large to email. What I'll do is upload it to a website and email you the link, so you can download it directly.
