    Hello,
I have recently started using a new laptop with Windows 2000 Professional. I use this laptop for day to day duties and I log-on to our company network which uses a domain name. No problems with this what-so-ever but what I would like to do is take this same laptop home and hook it up to my home network which uses no domain but a workgroup only.
Is there a way to do this? Maybe there is something I can do on my home network to help the situation, I don't know.
There is probably a very simple way of doing this but unfortunately, I need to be led in the right direction. Can you help, please?

    Thanks.

    Several approaches to your situation.

Probably the simplest would be to put NetBeui on the laptop and also on your other home PCs. Then make the home workgroup name the same as the work domain name. I think that since NetBeui doesn't understand domains, it will simply use the domain name from your laptop as a workgroup name.

You may also have to put user accounts on the 2K laptop that exactly match username/passwords on your other home systems for them to have access to it.

If you run XP on any of the home PCs, take a look at -

There's a program called Netswitcher that eases the task of changing network settings, apparently asking when you boot which setting you want to use. Google search should find it.

    I Had The Same Problem,

I had the same problem, then I created another hardware profile and now when I get home I turn my laptop on and it gives me a choice to connect to my home network or the network where I work. Try it yourself it works beautiful, good luck.

I tried the setting up a second Hardware Profile but I still had to change the IP addresses to gain access. It worked fine, then I rebooted and started up with the original Hardware Profile and the IP address was set for home and not work.
I guess I need to have it find the IP address automatically at work but I need to specify the IP address at home.
Maybe I did something wrong but making a second Hardware Profile didn't seem to gain me anything.
If there is something I may have missed, please share with me.
I tried to download the Netswtcher program that was suggested by obenton but the file must have been corupted or something because it didn't work at all. I've been a little hesitant to try again but I do plan to try again. I'll just wait until I have a couple days to work out the bugs.
I tried the Netbeui trick but the work domain server didn't like that at all.
I'll keep trying different things. There must be a simple way. If nothing else, I can just change network settings everytime.
Thanks to all of you for your imput.

Your domain server should not have even noticed NetBeui if you have a TCP/IP network there.

And if you have the workgroup name at home the same as the domain name at work AND if you are set (on all PCs) to use NetBeui at home, there should be a short delay starting up at home while your PC tries and fails to find a DHCP server but it should work nicely after that. You will need a local username on the PC to use for logon.

At work it should just start up normally. No need to ever change the settings.
