Well I got my modem driver installed correctly, finally, and now the tray icon is reporting the TRUE speed of my connection-28800. I have been trying a couple different init strings to try to get to at least 56K to no avail. Is there anything else I could try to speed up my connection? Thanks

    Does your ISP support 56k?
    FYI:
I gave my old computer to my parents. I was able to connect @ 50k here in Virginia to my ISP. They live in South Carolina and have aol (don't even get me started on aol.... ). Anyway they only connect @ 28k. Thats all the bandwidth they get from aol.

chuneke - best I've ever seen or heard about is around 50K. And that only if you are within a certain number of hops from the phone company central switching equipment.

Have you gotten faster connections in the past from the same location?

I had a separate phone line installed for my computer, and had a 56K modem installed. My internet provider had 56K access. I tweaked it everyway from Sunday, and the best I could do was an occasional 28.8. Most times, it was only 26.4. I hooked it up to the phone line I used for voice, and got a 30+ once.....ONCE. I've been to just about every webpage out there that discussed tweaking modems and settings for faster access, and never had any success. The only thing left was to check the phone lines, and the phone company came out and looked at it...and then told me that "all we guarantee is a 2400 baud connection ". I fought with it for 4+ years. Finally, we got cable access in our area, and now I'm laughing at everyone that is still on dialup access. My guess is that the phone lines in your area won't support anything more than a 28.8 connect. I sympathize with you...been there, done that. Now, I have cable access, running about 39 times the speed of a 56K modem...and it cost me about the same as it did to have dialup access and a second phone line for the computer. Wish I had better advice to give you...but I'm betting it's the phone lines.

    Modem Speed Slow

Until 2 weeks ago, with a 56K modem, my speed was average 48,000 to 49,500 bps. Had a second phone installed which required BellSouth to install a DAML (digital analog interface) so they say. From that date on, my speed is consistently 26, 000 to 28, 400 bps. Phone company refuses to remove the interface saying they only guarantee 19,000 bps and the DAML is state of art and allows two dial tones on one pair of the drop. My position is bring both dial tone in on two drops vs one and remove the DAML. My next stop is the state utilities commission.
BellSouth's position, "learn to live with it ", go to FAST ACCESS or remove the second phone.
