Hi, I'm trying to load the software for my new ADSL connection under XP, previous attempts have aborted due to a bad cable connection. Whenever I try to Install now, I get the message that " An installation is already in progress ". I have deleted all files I can find relating to the modem setup and named as such " Orange" Livebox" and "Sagem ". I have also deleted all running processes in task manager which don't seem to be normal running OS files. Even turning the PC off and then on again has no effect on thia phantom "running installation ".
Is there any way that I can terminate it and again to attemp to load the software?
    TIA

I'm pretty certain there is a registry entry called something like "In Progress" that will list the offending item. Deleteing it would help.

    Installation already running

Thanks for the information Steve. The only similar reference in the registry to "in Progress)" is the following key:
Active directory REG_MULTI SZ Current control\SET\Services\NTDS\ restore in progress.

Does that sound right? or does it relate to system restore?

Just thought I'd like an opinion b4 I edit it out.

    TIA

The "installation in progress" files are likely in C:/Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Temp. All files there are safe to delete. Use Disk Cleanup to get rid of them. (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.

    ionstallation in progress

PeteC & TonyT, Thanks for the suggestions, did both but still have the same problem, the new installation starts and after 5 -6 minutes of frantic hard disk activity just hangs with no further activity. I have tried someone else's installation disk with the same effect. The original installation stalled during a power outage which closed down the PC.
Any further suggestions or do I now have to clear my PC and re-install everything, can't do a backup and reinstall as I might be re-establishing the problem.
    Sounds like I'm stuck!

This may be the key to the problem and given the nature of the outage may have caused damage to the system.

I would look at several options before considering a reinstall .....

Either run chkdsk /r on the drive or the manufacturer's disk diagnostics - preferably both, to remove any doubts about the drive ....

    ExcelStore ....

    Hitachi .....

    Samsung ....

    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum .....

    Western Digital ....

Rather than a clean install consider either a System Restore to a point prior to the outage or a repair of XP - only possible if you have a full copy of XP, not a Recovery disk.

I am not aware of the installation procedure for your ADSL modem/router, but if it was connected during the outage I would try it on another computer - you said that you had tried another software disk so presumably you have a friend with the same setup.

    Installation already running

PeteC, TonyT and others, thanks a million for your help. Somehow after doing most things suggested and restarting in "Safe" mode, I managed to get the software to talk to me after nearly a week of switching on and off and hair tearing . I NOW HAVE BROADBAND UP AND RUNNING!
Without having WindowsBBS to bounce my problems at, I'd still be dialling up.
Thanks to all those who messaged me and everyone else at WBBS.
You guys deserve a medal for the service which you provide.
My best regards from the centre of France.

Glad we could help, Brian although you did all the hard work :) Put it down to the Wonders of Windows - the cause will probably never be known.
