graphics card - nvida geforce 6800
I Have the latest graphics card drivers from the nvidia website.

Hi, I've recently been having a problem with my graphics card.A couple of days ago i was using my pc just browsing then my screen starts flashing slowly and my pc restarts with lines across my screen during bootup, but it stops just before windows login and screen turns off, so i restarted and went into safe mode and disabled the card then windows boots fine. So i left it a day and enabled the card and windows booted properly and the card was working, only about an hour later the same problem occurs, it just flashes and goes off, tried again and again, same thing happens.
I believe it could be overheating, so ive checked the fan and it seems to be fine but i gave it a good clean anyway. But still no luck :(
If anyone has experienced this or knows something about it I would appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

    Thanks, Luke.

My guess would be that the card may be failing - have you had the card out and cleaned the contacts?

If it's not the card it could be a motherboard problem with the AGP or PCIE slot.

I might agree about looking at heat/temperature. You can try leaving the cover off the case and directing a desk fan into it. What is producing the heat though? Could say, the vents be blocked or system cooling fans be breaking down? [Check that the fan in the power supply is spinning freely and moving air well.] Is the power supply adequate for your system? Maybe the PSU is starting to fail.

I have had a graphics card overheat from a bad set of drivers. Look at updating the motherboard chipset drivers before updating the graphics drivers. Graphics drivers can get "jammed ". I uninstall graphics drivers in Safe Mode, using the uninstaller in Add or Remove Programs, but there is a sticky post at the start of this forum.

If the problem with the first few screens happens when you restart and the graphics chip may still be hot, compare it to a cold start (let it cool down).

    Thanks Both!
I reinstalled the chipset drivers I already have installed because they were already the latest ones and it seems to have done the job so far, it restarted once a couple of hours ago but booted without any lines. Hopefully it's done the job, I will let you know.
Thankyou for the replies! much appreciated.

    Thanks, Luke.
