Wondering if anyone has ever run into a File Size limitation when compressing files?

I tried to zip up a 2.2GIG SQL database backup file via remote desktop so I can copy the file to my local machine. In theory, compressing it would have gotten the size much closer to one gig.

    I got a:

"No Way Jose That File is Too Freakin Big Call Someone That Cares" type error message.

I tried it on two different machines at the clients end. One was Server 2000 and the other was Server 2003.

I'm currently coping the raw backup...Should only take another week at its current rate.

    Hi Steve

It may be that the partition that the remote file is on is a FAT32 and may be bigger than you think.

Then it may be the compression program limitations you are using. Free disk space?

Install 7zip quick and easy and if it don't do it there are other issues! And one of the fastest and smallest compressors.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Drive is NTFS and has plenty of space.
Am using the compression built into Server 2003.

I have 7-zip and they don't....Not Yet anyway. Installing it today is an issue due to restrictions and their IT guy not being there.

Ok that explains it! The windows compression is weak compared to 7Zip.

If you need the job done today get 7Zip Portable.

Send it there extract and runs from its own folder does not install in add/remove nor install any registry settings.

Holy cow. Being a Speed Junkie and working with large files is a bad combination.

Had to leave a pc on all night to copy the raw/unzipped file. Turned on my monitor and the sreen was frozen...Panic kicks in...But the file download Did complete.

Currently testing 7-zip. Seems to be working. Estimated time is 22 minutes.

Am also coping a copy of the file to another local pc. Estimated time is 35 minutes.

I think it'll be easier and cheaper if I send this client a dvd burner and our FedX account number:eek:

ps. 7-zip shrank it from 2.2 gigs down to 176 megs.
