I want to use remote access on a computer with XP Home. I have a CD with XP Pro and would like to know if I can copy something from that CD to enable XP Home to set up remote access from other computers. I don't want to completely install XP Pro to accomplish this.

RDP is not available in XP Home.

There are hacks to do this, search goggle. Take care what you do to get this as it requires registry manipulation!

Your best option is UltraVNC. http://majorgeeks.com/UltrVNC_d4143.html

    Overview
This FREE software package will install the client portion of Remote Desktop on any of the following operating systems: Windows 95, Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition, Windows Me, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003. (This is the same version of the client software as in Windows XP Service Pack 2.) When run, this software allows older Windows platforms to remotely connect to a computer running Windows XP Professional with Remote Desktop enabled.

It doesn't mention Home, but I'm certain its a typo...But here it says:

    System Requirements
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 2000; Windows 95; Windows 98; Windows ME; Windows NT; Windows Server 2003; Windows XP

This sofware only works one way. From an XP home machine, you can dial out so to speak and take control of a Pro machine.

I do want to access the XP Home from elsewhere. I have downloaded the VNC software and trying to learn how to use it.

    Thanks.

    OK a quick!

Run UltraVnc server on the XP Home! Set it to run as a service or just add it to startup, also set a secure password. It must be running in the system tray (beside time lower rt corner).

Run Vnc Viewer on the other computer to connect to XP Home using the WAN IP as mentioned below!

It or RDP will not connect to a 192.168...... IP except from another computer on your local LAN. (connected to your router or switch at the location of the XP Home).

All of the below would also have to be handled with RDP these are not just for VNC!

Add an exception for winvnc in your firewall.

Get your internet IP (WAN) ip from http://mywanip.com.

If you have a router tcp/ip port 5800 will have to be forwarded to the Lan Ip of the computer typically 192.168...... something.

    Other things to consider.

Do you ahve a dynamic wan IP? If so WAN ip can change.
