I don't understand why the repair didn't work off my orig XP CD, but maybe you can answer that one later.
Let's get this baby running again!
I vote SP2 since I know that's safe, and what's already on there.

If there's a reason to go SP3 then I'm open.
That box has an AMD chip, which I hear is preferable w/ SP3

OK! Do you have a laptop or can you take your Windows SP1 CD to another computer and prepare to build a slipstreamed SP2 CD?

If so let me know and I will begin the instructions in the next post.

    And when do you think?

    OK Fantastic!

This should take about 40 minutes.

    Read this carefully

    1. Place Windows SP2 CD in CD drive
    2. Reboot
    3. Hit enter when it says Hit enter to boot from CD
    4. Setup will begin click OK to proceed with set up.
    5. At a point the setup program will offer to let you "R" repair usining Repair Console. Decline this offer and continue installing.
    6. Watch for this: Setup will anounce it has found and existing Windows installation and will offer another "R" to repair the installation. This is the R we want!

After that windows will proceed as a normal install.

IF it does not offer to Repair the installation then stop. Look for warnings that it will overwrite etc.

See this for the screens. Just the first post!

Let me know if you feel comfortable with this!

    SUPER BUMMER

Says partition is either too full (has 19G open), not formatted, or formatted w/ an incompatible file sys.
CRAPLOA!!! This means it will format over my data!
(A fate almost worse than death!)
    What now Mike?

OK so you are into it now!

Warning if the Windows folder or Registry is severly damaged Windows may not be able to detect an existing installation. BAD NEWS!

GOOD LUCK! Let me know if it does detect the existing installation and continue!

    Hold the phone!
Are you saying I should let it continue to format my drive?
If so, aren't we talking about the total loss of data?

NO! Do not continue! Get ready to abort this process!

But on the screen you are on give me more details about the screen you are on. Did it ever detect a windows installation.

We were posting at the same time I just now saw your post!

We have other options to save your data.

    The rest of screen says...
partition is either too full , not formatted, or formatted w/ an incompatible file sys.
to continue install setup must format existing partition
    C:partition (unknown) 190772 MG 190771 MG free
on 190780 MG disk0 at Id0 on bus0 on attipi (MBR)
Then choice of format NTFS quick or regular

Note: HD has 19G free - I checked it the last night it was operating.

    Abort abort abort!

This may now need to be salvage operation or at least we need to get your data before trying another repair operation.

    But there is hope yet!

This may be because you need to F6 and load SATA Drivers for setup.

Does the computer have a floppy and if so did you get some drivers on a floppy with the computer?

Im going to eat a sandwich (5:45PM here) so I will be gone for 30 or minutes. But befroe going to eat. I am going to send you a post to get the data off the HD and see if it even is still there.

Yes, there is a floppy, but no drivers.
I built the box, but never planned for this, so no back up! ****!!!!
I only have the XP disc. I should have known better.
Can you email me drivers (or tell me where to download them)?
    Enjoy your lunch/dinner Mike.
    Chas
