    Hi,

haven't logged inf or a while but you guys do have a 100% success rate for me!!!

I've got a problem where when I go to my computer the window opens but it takes up to a minute for any info to appear (drives etc), I have a similar problem when browsing to folders from within applications. Right click is also slow to load. Any clues? I'm running XP Home and have run Spybot, adaware, defragged etc.

    Cheers,

    Ron.

    Windows XP Icon Cache

Are you experiencing icon lag, while browsing thru all your Start icons and programs? Do you have a smaller menu delay and your icons need ages to load? No need to give up.

Just delete the IconCache.db file from your profile directory (usually /Documents and Settings/Username/Local Settings/Application Data).

    Hi Steve,

desktop icons are fine. I looked for the file you mentioned but it wasn't there. I recently deleted two unused user accounts. Could this have anything to do with it?

It's a hidden file. Go to Win Explorer->Tools->Folder options->View tab and unselect the three "hide files" options.

Deleteing the cache file can help speed up all file browsing.

Already done that. It's not a file browsing issue. If I click on my computer it takes an age to load the list of drives etc. If I am trying to add a folder to my itunes library for example the selection box also takes an age to load.

I would consider both of those examples to be part of browsing for files...Then again, that's just me.

    Slow computer

    Ron UK:

Ron I had the same problem. What done was to download SuperAntiSpyware.con free version. Download and manually update the anti spyware program and do a complete system scan. Secondly I downloaded
Microsoft Bootvis , Click the trace tab and optimize system.

    Good luck, Gillette252

First off for RonUK and Gillete, are you guys running any anti-avirus progs that could be hindering your performance? Also can you guys provide pc specs(proccessor speed, ram, etc?) Have you guys installed all the latest windows updates? Runing spyware programs is a good first start(I recommened LAvasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy. Both available through cnet.com for free). Also, try checking your running processes through Task Manager and see if your recognize anything out of the ordinary...

    The solution here---> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819101(Ref: Steve R Jones's post)
provides a good way to speed up performance on slower or out dated machines.

done all of the appropriate stuff above. I'd already run adaware and spybot and used bootvis. It's not just a right-click problem. When I click on the my computer icon the window loads but it takes a couple of minutes to load any details of the drives etc. I've checked cpu usage and it seems OK.

What are your specs again? This could be a hardware issue, but it isn't likely. Also a reinstall of windows could fix it but not to many people like doing that. Have you tried making a new user profile to see if it does on a new user's settings?
