[Run] Ubuntu inside XP

    I downloaded a copy of Ubuntu, v.8.04, and burned the .iso to a CD. I used it to boot my computer and it found my Internet connection immediately but I wasn't able to get my printer to work, but on the other hand I did not spend much time trying to do that. In this mode the program works well and is running entirely with my 1GB of RAM. I noticed that there appears to be a way to run Ubuntu within WIN XP without having a dual boot. You need an extra program to set this up? Has anyone tried this and are you happy with the result? Do you have any good references for setting this up? Thanks.

    You can run another op sys using "virtual desktop" software. But in truth, Ubuntu will run smoother if just install it on the hard drive or use the live cd method. As for your printer, what model is it? You can see if it's supported in linux by searching this database:

    The printer, an HP 6122, is supported according to the list. Thank you for the pointer.
    The printer is being used as a network printer connected to a wireless Netgear Print Server by wire, which also serves as the internet provider to the computer, also wired to it, on which I will install Ubuntu. I already ran Ubuntu on it using the CD and it found the internet through the Printer Server, so I was surprised it did not see the printer which has the same IP address as the server.Could that be the problem?

    Wireless Netgear Print Server? What model & version number? You mean a wifi router with a built in print server or a print server device connected to the wifi router? Anyway, it will take some doing to get a network printer working.

    After you install Ubuntu, use the package manager (synaptic) to install CUPS (Common Unix Printing System) if not already installed. Then access the CUPS control panel via a web browser using the address:
    localhost:631

    In there you will be able to add a printer and set it up IF CUPS can see the network printer on the lan.

    It's funny but Ubuntu can see my wife's network printer which is connected to the wireless router, but it does not see my network printer connected to the wireless print server, which communicates with the wireless router. My printer does not have its own IP address, it is the same as the wireless print server. My computer is wired into the wireless print server.

    Pls list all hardware by name & model #s.

    If the printer is connected by usb cable to the wifi print server then you probably had to install drivers for the print server on Windows. Not likely you'll find linux drivers for the Netgear print server.

    Hi Tony,
    The Print Server is WGPS606 and the firmware is v1.0_025.
    Can you check if this is supported by Ubuntu 8.04?
    Many thanks for your help.

    The printer is wired to the Print Server and I did use a CD for the installation. So perhaps there are some drivers on the CD?

    You can connect to the print server control panel using a web browser and the ip address of it. The default ip address of that device is 192.168.0.102 unless you set a static ip already (you should use a static ip).
    Default username: admin
    Default password: password
    The above info is in the user manual that comes w/ it.

    Hi Tony,
    I originally set everything up. The IP address of the Print Server is fixed at
    192.168.1.25 and I've been there many times but the only thing it states about the printer is that it is on LPT1.
    I don't quite understand why Ubuntu sees the Printer attached to the router but not the one attached to the print server.
