    Hi all,
Stumbled upon this site and it looks a good one to bookmark for the future.
I'm not a complete PC noob but I do lose track of jumps in technology with boards & cards etc. I'm looking to upgrade my PC CPU & graphics card but possibly need a bit of help before buying stuff on the net.

    I've got a ASUS M2V VIA K8T890 (Socket AM2) Chipset Motherboard (http://www.digit-life.com/articles2/mainboard/asus-m2v-k8t890.html).

For the CPU upgrade, can I add any Socket AM2 processor or will there be a limit to what this board can handle? I had my eye on the AMD QUAD-CORE 9550 PHENOM RETAIL AM2 on a site.

On the graphics cards, same q - can I plug in any PCIE card in there? I'm a big fan of nVidia cards so I've always stuck with them.

Cheers for taking the time to read this & any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Steve :D

Steve - Welcome to the Board :)

You're out of luck on the Phenom - your board only supports a range of Athlons, Opterons and Semperons ....

From the URL you posted ....
An nVidia based PCIE graphics card would be fine.

Cheers for the really quick response & info - saved me from making a possible expensive mistake.

That page is a huge help, will play around with some options (and my budget) to see what I can manage.

    Thanks again,
    Steve :D

    sorry - 1 more...

I'm just weighing up options on what to do with the CPU - ie new m/board vs best CPU I can do with this board.

I'm plodding along with an Ath64 3200+ 2.00Ghz CPU at the mo. Am I likely to see much of an improvement with going for the Athlon 64 X2 6000 3.00GHz or am I wasting money in not opting for the new board?

    Cheers
    Steve

There is a comparision article on processors in the June issue of Computer Shopper, but the slowest Athlon compared is the 64 x2 4200+ (2.2 Ghz) , coincidentally the CPU I currently use in my home built box.

So taking that as the basis the comparative benchmarks between that and the Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.00GHz are ....

    Video-Encoding

    Athlon 64 x2 4200+ - 192
    Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - 254

    Multitasking

    Athlon 64 x2 4200+ - 147
    Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - 192

    Overall

    Athlon 64 x2 4200+ - 142
    Athlon 64 X2 6000+ - 189

If you choose to replace the motherboard there are two factors to bear in mind .....

Strong possibility that your current memory will not be suitable. If you don't have a PCIE graphics card you may well need one. Best value for money today is Intel, AMD have slipped behind. Suggested chip - Best Buy in CS - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ ~£125

I meant to post the benchmarks for the Intel chip - they are, in the same order as above ....

ouch, didnt realise the gap was so wide now - maybe will hold my cash for a bigger upgrade later & a swap to an Intel chip later in the year then. I had been tempted to do something cos my set up has felt pretty slow since vista upgrade. I whacked an extra 2GB RAM in which has helped - should be able to cope for a bit longer.

Cheers again for all your help :D
