A clean install is not really my thing. Way too much work. I ran another unattend repair. This takes over an hour. Just a few things have to be changed. If that does not cure the problem, I may run a repair with the XP CD. If that does not work I may try the D: Partition with Presario_RP. Format is not required. Clean install with the OEM XP CD's takes hours and then hours to reinstall applications and make the changes so things happen the way I want. Then more time to remove the **** that Compaq (HP) loads.

I had a lockup yesterday. Then disabled 1 Shell Extension. I had a lockup today. Then disabled another Shell Extension. That makes a total of 3 Shell Extensions disabled. Here we go again.

I have been off of here for 2 days. There is a terrible flood near here and DSL internet connection has been off. Telephone has been allright but DSL not. Water is higher than the 100 year level. No lockups during that time. I am now reenabling extensions, one at a time. So far 2. I will try another today.

Maybe you need constant flooding to fix your issue...;)

We are 10 miles away and about 200ft higher than the river. The water has started back down. It may be at or lower than 100 year flood stage by June 20. The only way to go south or north is a 6 lane interstate highway. There is only the right lane open to traffic. The other lanes are used by sandbag trucks, police, firetrucks, etc. The traffic is backed up for miles. I hear people are stopping on the bridge and taking pictures.

I am back for now. Cannot depend on DSL right now. No lockups for last 2 days. Enabled 2 more extensions counting the one today. 3 more to go.

Still cannot depend on DSL. Have not had lockups. Only one extension disable left. Will enable and see what happens. Last chance.

All extensions are enabled, and no lockups. Might have been something else. I do not know. The only other thing changed is I updated Opera browser to 9.5. I had 9.27 for many months, and I doubt if that was a problem. Without the lockups, I do not suppose I can "fix" it. Will see what happens.

    Sp3?

The same happened to me after installing SP3 on win xp pro. I removed most of the quick open possibilities, and the system does not hang any more, but it uses a long time loading the links. The first time I use right-click, I still get a white field, have to wait, and then the links load. I guess it has something to do with caching of icons, and that the amount of cache has to be increased. But I have not been searching for the subject yet. If you find it, please post.

If you can work on the Registry.
Got Start, Run, Type regedit, OK.
Click the plus to the left of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
Click the plus to the left of Software.
Scroll down and Click plus by Microsoft.
Scroll down and Click plus by Windows.
    Click plus by Current Version.
    Click the folder Explorer.
Check the right hand pane for Max Cached Icons.
If it is not there, right Click right hand pane and choose new String Value.
Type Max Cached Icons, then right Click and Click Modify.
Under Value Data type 2000, Click OK.
This should give you a large enough Cache.

I am not sure, but I could have problems with "Display Panning CPL ". Right click and properties CLSID: {42071714-76d4-11d1-8b24-00a0c9068ff3} in the Registry has Display Panning CPL. Also InProcServer32 Has Default is deskpan.dll and Threading Model is Apartment. Display Panning CPL is in several places in the Registry. deskpan.dll is shown in 3 places in the Registry. Search does not find it on my hard drive. I understand by checking Google that it belongs in C:/Windows/system32. It is not there. It is also not in I386 in windows or in my XP CD as deskpan,dl_.

Increase icon cache. Thanks to Walrot! You're the BOSS!

System works much better now, thanks! Still there are some problems I think are related to SP3. The opening of programs have slowed down dramatically, and I have no clue why?? Any ideas?

OK! I have not had lockups for days with all extensions enabled. I was dumbfounded before, and I am dumbfounded now. Maybe that is par for the course with me.
