After just having an update to my machine w/ Vista Home Premium (don't like that OS at all) remove my sound drivers, I am leary of the updates Microsoft is putting out. Since my XP Pro machine is running fine (other than slow start up & shutdown - I'll start another thread on that), I am hesitant to go w/ SP3.

What are the reasons to add, or not add, SP3?

Thx Pete. After reading the thread I see no reason to go w/ SP3. ;)

If the computer is fully updated and running OK, there isn't much in SP3 that you really need but it adds a few hundred MB to the installation. Most users have no problems with SP3 but some (not many) get in trouble. The conclusion might be to play it safe and not install SP3.

SP3 does include all updates and hotfixes released to date and if you in your next thread come to the conclusion that a reinstallation is the way to go, SP3 is a "must ". The obvious reason is that you don't have to install the "hundred" security updates that have been released since SP2. If your XP install CD is pre SP2, you must install at least SP2 to get any updates at all and that would make no sense.

Slipstreaming SP3 into any XP install CD you may have will eliminate the extra megabytes added by the "on-top" installlation of SP3.

Thx Christer. I am running SP2, though I couldn't say if I have every update, since that computer's been offline for about a month now. It does run fine, so I think I'll play it safe and stick w/ SP2.
