    Win XP Pro

I upgraded my computer, new mother board, processor, ram, hard drive etc.
I got the you need to activate windows. No problem, i call the number and activate it. i go ahead and begin installing the drivers for the new motherboard and components and all that. I am now having problems.

windows tells me that i have 3 days to activate windows. this is 2 days ago. later the same day it tells me i have 2 days to activate. i say i better do it now.

i am not able to get the dialog windows with the activation info.

I boot and windows starts and i get the do you want to activate now, yes or no and when i hit yes it goes back to the desktop for a minute and the same window pops up asking the same thing.

    what do i do now?

Try running the following from the command prompt:

    C:\windows\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a

I can only get windows to open in safe mode. If I try to do a normal boot I just stuck on a loop of the activation question and if I click on yes or no it just goes back to the question again. i dont get a task bar or anything other than my background image and the dialog box with the activation question.

i did what you said in safe mode and got this:

    "Windows XP Set up:
You cannot activate Windows from safe mode. Please restart your computer in normal mode to activate. "

    any other ideas?
I cant call Microsoft until Monday, as if they will be much help.

Well the fun continues ... with microcrap it always does.
Here is the latest, while following the directions in the link above something is missing.

"Step 3: Remove the RESETS registry subkey
    1. In Registry Editor, expand My Computer, and then expand HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
    2. Expand SOFTWARE, and then expand Microsoft.
    3. Expand Windows NT, and then expand CurrentVersion.
    4. Expand Winlogon, and then expand Notify.
    5. Under Notify, right-click RESETS, and then click Delete.
    6. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the RESETS subkey. "

Under Notify there is NOT a RESETS to delete.

ALSO in step it didnt find any of the files:

Step 8: Remove the files that are associated with the script
    1. Click Start, and then click Search.
    2. Under What do you want to search for, click All files and folders.
    3. In the All or part of the file name box, type the following, and then click Search:
    reset5.exe; reset5.dll; reset5.dat; reset5.dt*; srvany.exe
This action performs a search for all the following files:
    • Reset5.exe
    • Reset5.dll
    • Reset5.dat
    • Reset5.dt*
    • Srvany.exe
Note If you use a different search tool such as Windows Desktop Search, use this tool to search for each of these individual files.
    4. In the results pane of the Search Results dialog box, right-click each file, and then click Delete.
    5. Click Yes to confirm the removal of the file.
    6. When you have finished removing these files, exit the Search Results dialog box.
    7. Restart the computer and let Windows restart in normal mode.

Microsoft does tend to leave things out...like "if present, delete... "

I've had some success with just renaming (or deleting) the wpa.dbl and wpa.bak files in Safe Mode and rebooting, then reactivating. Getting rid of those two files may be all you need to do to get the activation process to complete.

I did the whole process from the link you gave me with no luck.
I had already tried the deleting if those files too, no deal.
I'm still in the same boat. I guess I'll be calling microsoft.
I'm sure that will be fun and rewarding ...... hello India .....

I called Microsoft and they had me use the system restore to roll back to the day before my problems started. I then went ahead and re-did the activation process.

Thanks to all for their help.
