I re-installed windows xp a week ago and all was fine. Then my monitor just went black yesterday.I get nothing after it boots up but a black screen.I have a brand new hard drive. It's an HP media center about 4 years old.

    Z71kitty - Welcome to the Board :)

Are you as sure as you can be that the computer has fully booted? If you have the sounds enabled do you hear the startup sound?

A few checks on the monitor .....

Is the Power light on? Does this change from green to orange (usually) after a period of time as the monitor goes into standby?

Check and remake the cable connections to the monitor at both ends - unplug and plug in again.

If you have the opportunity try the monitor on another computer and vice versa - try another monitor on your computer. Beg, borrow or steal from a friend :)

We need to establish if the monitor is working or has failed.

As you have been inside the case to fit a new hard drive go back in and check that all the cables are well seated - ease the graphics card out of it's slot and replace - if you have onboard graphics ignore this.

Turns out it was the monitor. The four coils on the board in the monitor neede a little more solder on the legs that connect them.It looked fine with the naked eye but adding a little more solder to them did the trick.I hope this may help someone else out there with a similar problem.

    Thank you,Ginger

Thanks for the update - glad to hear you found the problem. Looks like you are somewhat more than a beginner :)
