Hi..I have a HP pc running Windows XP sp2...its been running slow lately, mostly when starting up.It will stay on the HP Invent blue screen for 20-30 minutes before going to sign in screen.Sometimes it takes awhile to sign in too. Spyware Doctor came up with Trojan-Downloader.Agent.BP?.There were 3 letters after Agent, unfortunately can't remember the third. After cleaning this up, ran Spyware Doctor again and it came up clean.Ran Ad-Aware and Avast! Anti-Virus and both come up clean.Machine is still running slow.Downloaded HighJackThis and here is the log..

    Hi Rackster

    Sorry for the wait.

    Please do this.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

    Thanks
    Geri

Hi Geri, thanks for responding....When I try to reboot it stays on the blue screen that shows the HP logo with the word Invent below it.At the bottom of the page it says <F1-Setup><F10-System recovery>.Nothing happens when I press the F8 key continually. In my original post I stated it stays on this page for 20-30 minutes but its alot close to an hour before it goes to the sign in page. Does SDFix have to be run in safe mode?Right now I'm on my laptop waiting for the desktop to respond.

    Hi
OK, I was informed that this "may" be a hardware problem, but lets do this and we'll see what we are looking at.

OK please do these in the order given.

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges to complete the following.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy and then paste the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

Please post the "main.txt" log only for now.

    Now this.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

It's best to disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool.
Check this link for any applicable programs you may have.
    • Close all open programs and windows
    • Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
    • Vista users right click Combofix.exe and select Run As Administrator.
    • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Note - ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.

Note - Combofix makes some changes when run to prevent autorun/autoplay of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices, to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you to use those devices, please ask how to reset it.

Please post the dss log and the combofix log.

    Thanks
    Geri

Thanks....one thing I'd like to add...did something maybe I shouldn't have.I ran the Kaspersky Online Scanner and it did say there was a virus. But while waiting for a response from the board I decided to download Kaspersky Anti-virus trial.I was hoping that it would be able to remove the virus since it knew one was there and my other programs didn't detect it.I had to remove spyware doctor because of a conflict with Kapersky. When I ran a scan with Kapersky it didn't find anything wrong,it came up clean. Why would the online scanner pick something up but thier ani-virus didn't find it?

    Hi Rackster
OK, I'm not seeing anything that jumps out at me.

Lets try this and see if it helps.

First remove the trial version of Kaspersky Anti Virus. and go back to Avast.

Now lets run a check disk and defrag.

Turn off virus protection and screen savers (if you have one running)

To turn off virus protection, right click on your virus protection icon down by the clock, click exit or close. click yes if asked if you want to close it.

    1. Click Start, Double click My Computer.
    2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, (C: Drive) and then click Properties.
    3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
    4. Click Defragment.

    CheckDisk

1.Double-click My Computer, and then right-click the local disk that you want to check. (C Drive)

2.Click Properties, and then click Tools.

    3.Under Error-checking, click Check Now.

4.Under Check disk options, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check both boxes.

    5.Click Start.

A window will open saying that it can not do chkdisk, will ask if you want to run it the next time you restart your computer.
    Select "Yes "

Click on "Start" click on Turn off computer, Click Restart.

This will take a while so let me know when it's done and if there are any improvements

    Geri

Ran defrag then check disk.Check disk went thru phase 1 but not phase 2.I tried it again and it went thru phase 1 and looked like it finished 2 before saying couldn't finish it.Tried it a third time and got same results. It never asked to restart pc.I'm going to reboot now and see what happens.

    Hi
I'm discussing this with noahdfear so I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

In the mean time please try this.

It may well be a RAM problem too. If you have more than 1 stick of RAM, you should remove one and test, then swap and test. If you only have 1 please remove it and reseat it.

Hello...here is the log you requested.

    [boot loader]
    timeout=3
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

I'm going to do the memory idea too.I'm pretty sure I have two sticks of memory, one that I added.

I pulled the one stick that I added and it did boot up correctly. What would be the cause of this? I added this stick a few years ago and it always worked fine. Does memory go bad like that?

    Hi Geri

I reinstalled the other stick of memory just to see what would happen and it booted right up.I guess I'm all set for now but am mystified how it happened in the first place.Plus where did the trojan-downloader that I thought was my problem go?

    Hi Rackster
OK, Well that's great to hear. :D

You can say a thanks to noahdfear, He's the one that suggested I have you try that. (Thanks Dave)

All the ones that Combofix removed were the problem.

Now lets make sure there is nothing lurking. Please do this.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:

    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache
    Recycle bin

The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

Now lets get a on-line scan.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks the ActiveX download, allow it, click on "Accept" again

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes or Install.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Please post the Kaspersky results.

    Thanks
    Geri

    Hi
It's possible, or it could be because it got dirty?

You can always check it, Make sure you turn off all power and unplug anything running to your tower that may have power. Use Compressed air to clean out your tower and put the stick back in and see what happens.

    OK Kaspersky looks good.

    Please do this.

You can delete any tools you were asked to download and the files/folders or logs they created, There will be newer versions if ever needed again any way.

Click Start>Run in the run box copy and paste or type ComboFix /u then hit Enter to uninstall ComboFix and remove the files/folders it created.

    This Tool.
    dss.exe

    This folder.
    C:\Deckard

We need to turn off and on system restore. There are infections in it and by using system restore you would reinfect yourself.

You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK
    6. Make a new restore point.
    7. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
Choose Create a restore point and clicked Next, Under "Type a description for your restore point…â€put a name in the box,. Click Create. In the next window click Close.

Let me know how things are running.

    Thanks
    Geri
