    There is .....

    http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download

but be aware that there are issues with AVG 8 - search the BBS for more info.

I have dumped AVG on my laptop in favour of Avira - also free which did very well in recent tests, outclassing some of the well known pay versions. Easy to setup - updates on boot.

Hi Pete, well I have gone the opposite way I have had Avira on my No.1 PC now for about 3-4 years and just changed to AVG 8.
Reason was I also had put Avira on a friends PC and some weeks ago due to unsavory surfing he picked up the Kvm Secure Trojan malware and all its accompanied junk. We ran Avira in Safe Mode and it came up clean, I then put on the trail version of Kaspersky and in conjunction with Spy Hunter we managed to clean up the mess.
I am a bit paranoid when it comes to Viruses and Malware and thought Avira should have picked up something but no not even a warning.
So far AVG 8 has given me no problem at all it is running nicely.

By those standards, you'll be changing Av every other month. No app will get everything all the time, it's just not possible with the way threats change from day to day and sometimes more than once a day.

And more disturbing in your post you refer to SpyHunter, which is a borderline rogue to some, it is to me. Those guys use all sorts of affiliates to push their crappy software. You have to buy it to remove anything it finds and half the time there isn't any actual threat. I hope you didn't get your pal to spend any money cuz that would be a shame.

SmitFraudFix would have done the trick and it does not prompt you for money.

If Norton scores 100% detection rate, I must be living in some different world.
AVG 8.0 is definitely having problems, and whoever made it to work fine, should be considered lucky. My advice...if you want to stay with AVG, keep ver 7.5, which will be receiving updates until, at least, the end of this year.
Switching to Avast, or Avira is another option.

    Just to chime in here:

I had to clean up an AVG 8.0 mess for a friend running XP - reverted to 7.5

I use v7.5 free on Vista and will continue for as long as it updates.

My friend brought me his XP computer, two days ago.
He updated to 8.0, and it was taking for ever to boot, and after booting, from every click to an execution was taking ages.
I uninstalled 8.0, went back to 7.5, and everything got back to normal.

    Hey wait a minute here?

Is there anyone not having problems with AVG8 except me.

I ignored the prompts to update at first, then my clients began to ask me if they should update or not there are a bunch of them. I told them to hold off that I heard there were issues with it.

So I had one of my own stations running it. Decided to test it 3 days ago.

    Runs great for me!

So via VNC I logged to a couple of clients yesterday morn and theirs is OK also.

But one thing I did out of habit. I always use this proceedure to remove or prior to reinstalling a program. And I did this to mine and my clients computers.

    1. Uninstall the program. In this case avg75.
    2. Reboot
    3. Do disk search (hidden files and subfolders) and delete for Grisoft*.* and Avg*.*
    4. Regseeker search and delete Grisoft and avg
    5. Reboot
    6. Regseeker Registry clean then CClean temp and registry, AFF-Cleaner.

Install AVG8 decline the toolbar and Link scanner.

    Works for me!

Using windows taskmanager and the newest process explorer have checked it while having 2 different Browsers open and a VNC connection doing a file transfer.

When these programs are not busy my processor runs at 1 to 7.

The same as when avg75 was installed.

So lets hear from some of you that have had sucess with AVG8 and how you installed.

    Mike

    Just consider two things:
    1. I've been dealing with computers for 20 years, I went through all your preliminary steps, and more. I spent two days, trying to install 8.0 on my Vista, and I wasn't able to do it. Frustrated enough, I went with Avast.
I spent another day, trying to do very same thing on my XP, and yes, I finally succeeded, but nobody will tell me, that any fine software takes a day for computer savvy person to install.
    2. Search Google for AVG 8.0 installation, and after installation problems, and hundreds of pages come up.
It must be something wrong with it, mustn't it?

    Hi Mike,
As I pointed out above I am still running on AVG 8 but I must admit it is a bit slower booting and executions are a bit slower as well compared to what I was used to with Avira. But apart from that it is running great.
I think I had been using Avira longer than most of you have heard of it.
I was using Avira when half of their Menu and help was all in German.
Kvm Secure is not that new that it had not time to recognize it as Trojan (Malware)
And yes TeMerc he ended up having to pay for Spy Hunter $30.- he did not care as long as he got rid of Kvm Secure and itś junk that comes with it.
We learn something every day here.

I had to wrestle with this one for a while but decided I'd better post as my experiences with AVG 8.0 Free have been a little uncomfortable. One might ask why? Simply put, it appears that I must have a rather large horseshoe stuck in my back pocket.

Like Mike, I manually uninstalled AVG 7.5, rebooted, cleaned the registry and rebooted again before installing 8.0. Similarly, I opted out of the toolbar install and haven't looked back since.

    ;)

edit: After reading Mike's next post (below), I felt a little more information might be helpful. Unlike Mike, I have left the link scanner enabled. Have installed AVG 8.0 on six machines to date (mine & my wife's desktops and laptops) and have advised at least a dozen others to go ahead and install after removing AVG 7.5. (The 7.5 upgrade Nag is usually good for a phone call from concerned users.) Almost all of my client base is using AVG 7.5 Free or NOD32 so I'll post any problems encountered.

    Thanks Hawk and Rockster

That was what I was looking for.

Broni didn't mean to ruffle your feathers.

All I was saying is AVG gave us a good run over years and I wanted to be fair to them.

I am not going to kick them to the curb like Obama did to his Pastor!:D

I am well aware of all the comments on this BBS and other press.

But instead of going totally negitive I wanted to give them the benifit of doubt.

I haven't heard if Grisoft has financial or programmer issues but they seemed to always have had a good product in the past.

Im sure as well known and based on the maturity, reputation and quality of the WindowsBBS that someone at Grisoft monitors this BBS ocasionally. So perhaps we give them a hand by telling them how we did it if it works for us.

I believe they will fix this fairly quickly!

It would be nice Mr. Grisoft it you made a comment to this BBS.

Besides in my client base of 55 Windows server networks with 885 workstations I need to make some reccomendations. No all run AVG some have their other acceptable to me favorites but there are still hundreds that run AVG paid versions and some are ready to be renewed.

A big job for me is on the way and I am already loaded. Using the procedure I outlined is no big deal as I do that on all I uninstall, well less than 10 minutes to do. So I am giong to be doing that even if I install a different Virus scanner.

Now I have not installed it on Vistsa it still has it own compatability problems better lately but they still exist.

Of the now 5 that I have done 4 were XP 1 was 2K!

NEWS: Yesterday one of the XP's began th have a boot to Desktop issue where the day before it was shutdown and rebooted several tines with no issues. Takes about 5 minutes to access the Desktop even after all icons were there.

So If AVG8 is working for you comment on the following.

In answering the below please post your OS XP 2K or Vista.

    1. did you do an uninstall before installing as opposed to going stright to the install?

    2. did you do deeper cleanups like myself and Rockster?

    3. perhaps it worked on a computer with a clean install

    4. or that has never had AVG at all before ( all of the above may indicate an issue of left over items of Avg7-7.5)

    5. Did you chose not to install the new Security Toolbar and or LinkScanner. As stated above I did not!

And Vista are any working with AVG8?

    Mike

Obama's pastor deserved to be kicked to the sidewalk and by extension, sometimes one needs to take more radical action. I've no loyalties to any software, period. If it no longer does what I expect it to do, I move on to something else. There are many good alternatives and therefore little reason to stick with something that many have found problematic. If some here have experienced success with AVG 8, good for them. We have found an alternative with which we are more than pleased. Bottom line: to each his own.

    Regards

    :D

OK I wish I had not even said that and this is the last I will say on politics!
Will not acknowledge anything else about this after saying the below!

Obama's pastor did not change just since he is running for the presidency. It is documented he has always been like this.

So only when it was inconvienient to his path to the white house did he kick him out. If he will kick him to the curb he will kick us to the curb.

Same for Hillary! You never ever forget if you have been shot at are or rushed out of something like 9-11. Her "Mis statement" was an out and out lie and if she will lie to get to be president she will still lie when she gets there and that will be to us!

    Mike
