    Ca A/v

    Hi poggy

Thanks for the tip... I will try that if the problem continues... I just rebooted twice and it didn't happen at all. Seems like I had decided it might be a once-per-24-hours thing before I left a couple weeks ago, so I'll see what happens tomorrow and/or thereafter and kill CA from the task mgr if it reoccurs. by the way, I have updated CA several times on the laptop since the restore and the problem has not reappeared there, so it may well not be the issue. I'll try mike flynn's idea if it reoccurs when I am back on this PC monday

Joe, the tool I had you run on the laptop, driver_service_info.exe gives us the same info (and then some) Mike has requested. I believe you'll find the responsible svchost process is the same as the laptop too; the one loading the netsvc processes. If so, refer to this post.

I used process explorer http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx to ascertain what the scvhost process was up to.
It had a whole lot of stuff linked to CA - ohm and I uninstalled CA while it was all bogged down just in case killing any processes prior to uninstallation messed it up or confused the uninstaller in any way. It took about 3/4 of an hour! But as soon as it rebooted, it was like a new machine.
I wonder if there's some exploit running around that compromises CA, or it is simply a glitch on some systems.
I installed Zone alarm free, avast, and a couple of free spyware removers - so far I havn't had any calls from my friend who owns the system.

    Anyhow... good luck with it.
