    Hello,
I have a laptop which originally had Windows 95 installed (I don'thave disk).
I upgraded to Windows 98 (I do have disk) and as part of that install, I included the 'Uninstall Windows' option. I also upgrade to IE6.
Everything worked fine for years but I recently have been having difficulties with Internet Explorer and could not fix it, so I thought I would uninstall W98 and reinstall it.
However, the uninstall only allows me to go back to Windows 95 so I went ahead. The problem is that having uninstalled W98, when the laptop tries to reboot, in the Startup menu I am getting :
    'command prompt only'
Warning Windows has detected a registry/configuration error. run SCANREG.
The following files are missing or corrupt
    c\:Windows\Himem.sys
    c\:Windows\Dblbuff.sys
    c\:Windows\Ifshlp.sys
    Cannot find WIN.COM
I have tried running Scanreg at the c\: prompt but it does not run
I have tried using the Boot disk that I created last year but it will not run
I have tried downloading from Bootdisk.com but it says its a non-system disk.
    Any advise please
    Regards

    Hi Peter

    FYI later contact us first!

The proper way to have corrected this issue would have been a repair/overlay install that would have kept all your setings.

And never revert back to an OS you do not have the CD for.

Depending on what the revert to win95 did you may can get everything back by doing a repair install.

    OK here you go!

Boot from win98 cd and begin the install go slowly and read carefully. If it gets to a place where it wants to install to windows.000 or something like that then edit it to read just Windows. Remove the .000.

Then continue with the install and if you are lucky it will boot up with all your documents emails etc.

Then you will need to visit Windows update to bring it up to current.

You could still have an issue with IE but we will handle that seperately.

get back and let us know!

    Mike

    Hello Mike,
    Thanks for your reply.
At present I can't boot from a: or d: drive.
From the Startup Menu, (which is all I can get) can you advise, in detail, how to do boot from d: drive
    Regards
    Peter

    Peter

Go into the BIOS and set the boot order to CD > Floppy > HD , save the settings and exit. The computer will then look to boot from the CD drive first if it contains a bootable medium, then the floppy, etc.

    Hi Peter

    Great news!

But to clarify were you able to repair/overlay install and keep all your programs, data and emails?
