We inherited some old equipment in our new office - we have a 4-port dsl modem and an old compaq desktop running xp prof 2002 sp 2. we also connected an hp laserjet 8000N to the modem. there's no cable to connect the printer to the tower. the laserjet prints self-diagnostic test pages fine, and I can see the printer on the network, see its status and change the printer configuration through the desktop. but we can't print. I checked the ip addresses and they are correct.

    Try this

    Then:
    1. First go the hp site and download drivers for the printer.
    2. Go to "Printers and faxes" in control panel and start the "Add Printer" wizard
    3. Select the option to install a Local printer (not a network printer!!) and remove the tick from "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer" and then click next.
    4. Select the option to Create a new port. Set the type of port as "Standard TCP/IP Port ". Click next and you will be taken to a wizard that will create the port for you (next step).
    5. In the box "Printer Name or IP address:" enter the IP address of the printer (the system will automatically generate a Port name based on what you put in the 'Name or IP' box , so leave it as suggested by the system). Click next and create the port.
    6. When you get to the point to install the printer software, use the "Have Disk" button to point the system at the drivers you downloaded at step one
    7. Then follow the rest of the wizard through just as you would for a local printer.
