    Hello all!

I am having a look at Firefox 2.0.0.14. This was not a clean installation but an upgrade from 1.0.6. (I think) which means that the storage location on D: alreday existed. I have two questions:

    1) When I arrange the bookmarks alphabetically, subfolders get mixed in among the links but I want to have the subfolders at the top and individual bookmarks below. Is there a way to achieve that, other than choosing "unsorted" and going through all folders, right-clicking and choosing "sort alphabetically?

    2) When I open a subfolder to click a link, the previously open subfolder remains open. Is there a way to get the previous subfolder to collapse automatically?

    Thanks for your time,
    Christer

    1. This seems to be an often reported issue. I have never paid any attention to how my bookmarks subfolders are arranged, and I find, in all cases that I have Bookmarks|Organize bookmarks|View|sorted by name. The bookmarks subfolders are organized alphabetically, when I look at the listed, and individual bookmarks follow the folders. However I prefer to arrange the folders in the Personal Toolbar Folder my way. Not alphabetically, nor randomly. I drag and drop them my preferred way.

    2. I don't know of a way to collapse the lists. I don't even look at the Organize Bookmarks, so it matters little to me.

    Christer,

You are correct, Firefox will only rearrange the bookmark order in Bookmark Manager. If you want to rearrange the order in which they appear when you select Bookmarks, right-click on any bookmark in the browser window (not in Bookmark Manager) and select Sort By Name. However, I did find these extensions, which look like it will sort your Bookmarks the way you want:

    Westside,
it seems like we're talking past each other. My FF and TB speaks Swedish so bear with me on my attempts at translations:

I have done a few tests and in Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks > View:

    - If I choose "Randomly" (the top choice) I can rearrange them by drag-n-drop.

    - If I sort by right-clicking and choosing "Alphabetically ", the subfolders get sorted separately (A-Z) and the links get sorted separately (A-Z) but I have to sort the links in each subfolder separately.

    - If I close the windows and go back, the choice "Randomly" is no longer checked but the choice "Alphabetically ". However, neither of the two bottom choices (sort order) is checked.

    - If I choose "By name" or any option other than "Randomly ", one of the bottom choices (sort order) gets checked and I cannot sort by drag-n-drop or right-click > alphabetically.

I think that I can live with sorting the different subfolders separately but it would be convenient if the subfolders were sorted separated from the links in all folder and subfolders by a "one click choice ".

    Ramona,
if I have chosen "Randomly" and in the left-hand pane, drag-n-drop a bookmark or right-click > sort by name, it also gets changed in the drop-down menu and in Bookmarks > Organize bookmarks > View. I'll have a look at the extensions.

I would not know what you want, so I cannot comment on the first extention.
Since I don't care about sorting any differently than I have my bookmarks, now, the problem may be there. Going to Add-ons|Bookmark sorting add-on}Options, I get everything I need. I think thatv it is a good add-on.
I agree that there is a problem with the second extention. I get a page not found, when I click directly, and I can download the .zip file, by right clicking on the line, and selecting to Save link as, but unzipping produces a format error.

I rolled back using Ghost, uninstalled the previous version (1.0.x) prior to installing 2.0.0.14 but I detect no differences. It seems like installing on top of a 2-3 years old version works well. Anyway, I'll poke it a bit more ... ... !

Installing on top may work. In a way, this is done using the incremental updates (not sure if available from such an early version). The incremental update download only part of the program, and then replaces and/or adds updated files.
I used the incremental update Help|Check for updates quite frequently, and never had the occasion of needing a clean install.

I think it depends on how well the installer analyzes the current installation. When I uninstalled from the Control panel > Add/Remove ..., the uninstallation left a lot of debris. I deleted all files and folders but didn't dig into the registry. 2.0.0.14 was the full installation.

Uninstalling will leave files and folders which can used by the installation of another version. One example is the plugins folder. The profile folder is not touched, but there is no requirement that the same profile be used.
You can direct your program to use another, or any profile by means of the profile manager switch. That is done by adding this to the Target line of the shortcut (right click|Properties): -p profilename
There must be one keyboard space in front of the minus, and of the profilename. Like this: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p Firefox1.0x
Firefox1.0x is the name of my profile.
I am using ccleaner to clean up the registry, if needed.
