I have a copy of XP Home Upgrade that is currently installed on an old desktop machine that I might want to sacrifice for an installation on another machine (laptop). There should not be any problem with transferring this installation (key, activation) to this laptop should there, as long as I remove it from the desktop?

From what I gathered from contacting MS a while back, the upgrade license is just like the retail version and CAN be transfered. Right? Or am I going to need to buy an new copy?

Providing you format the drive of the desktop you may install on the laptop - you will need to reactivate and if the online activation refuses call the no. given and explain what you have done. Should not be a problem.

I assume your Upgrade package is retail, as I have never heard otherwise, Its in retail packaging yes? (Box with fancy booklets and such). If this is the case then you can certainly install it on another pc, just as long as you get rid of your old installation. Just make sure you have another copy of windows, you will need to insert it during the install process to prove that you are "upgrading ". I believe it can be any CD from any version of windows as long as its not newer than XP Home. So if you are running Win 98 or 2000 or whatever on your laptop you can use your Windows CD or your OEM restore CD.

Well, technically the laptop will not have Win98 on it, but I do have a Win98 CD to verify during the installation.

I will get rid of the desktop install. I did not think it would be a problem transferring this "installation" but wanted to make sure.

Will an XP with SP1 key work with an XP with SP2 CD (both Retail Upgrade)?

Can't be definitive on that - presumably you do not have a key for the SP2 CD.

Workaround - Install XP SP1 then download and install SP3

No, I have a key and CD for both, but the copy that is "expendable" for my project is the SP1 copy. I do have an SP2 and SP3 CD, so its not a huge deal, just would be easier if i could install straight to SP2.

Go the SP1 > SP3 route then - or do you particularly want SP2?

All I can say is try it - it may work - SP2 with SP1 key that is.

I chatted with a very friendly and helpful MS support rep last night and confirmed that yes, the license can be transfered to the new machine, and yes, the SP1 key will work with the SP2 CD.

Though a couple of users on the MS forums say otherwise.

The support rep told me that if i ran into any trouble, i could contact him directly for more help.
