This might be a dumb question but I wish to ask it anyway. I have Windows XP and Internet Explorer 6 on my computer. If I were to disable Internet Explorer (assuming that I knew how to do that) would that mean that I could never connect to a web page any more? Thank you. abm

Using Internet Explorer - yes, but there are other browsers such as Firefox, Safari, Opera .... which you could use as the default browser instead.

Bottom line you need a browser to access the internet and remember that Outlook Express is integrated into IE, so this is required to assist with that functionality, although IE does not need to be the default browser.

    What's the background to this?

Thank you for your response. I had been considering installing Firefox but I was wondering, if I uninstalled IE first and not get a web page any more how could I install Firefox? Also, how would you uninstall IE? Thank you. abm

You cannot uninstall IE - it is an integral part of Windows. If you install Firefox it will ask if you want it to be the default browser - answer Yes.
