Hi, recently my keyboard driver has been going haywire.
Each time i restart my laptop, i have to reinstall the driver for it.
I'm using an external belkin standard keyboard on and dell laptop running windows XP pro.

Look in Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs for any programs that may be associated with the keyboard. Apart from a program for the Belkin, there is probably a program to "help" with the keypad, touchpad, etc on the laptop. You should try uninstalling and reinstalling those and you may need to look for updates at the Belkin and Dell websites.

the weird thing that i saw was i have 2 keyboard drivers.
Both are with the same name but one had an error.
I uninstalled and reinstalled it multiple times using the window's in-built driver but the problem keeps on reoccurring.

Looking at the Dell website, there does not seem to be software/drivers related to the keypad which I thought might be interfering with the keyboard drivers, but there is an update for the touchpad (synaptics driver). That may be related(?)

    [Win XP drivers]

One keyboard driver will be for the Belkin, the other will be for the keypad on the laptop. You can try uninstalling both, they will be reinstalled automatically. The one that seems to be "working correctly" may be jamming the other from installing correctly.

Do you happen to use a docking station? There are drivers for that.

It seems to be a Human Interface Device (HID) problem. I could not be sure whether that is keyboard <-> keypad or some other sort of interface device driver or software.

You can try going into BIOS/startup configuration settings and set to defaults. Press the F2 key when you see the Dell splash screen at startup (although it may be F1 or Del key, I press all three :)). There will be a (reset to) Defaults setting.

If it keeps playing up, look at software rather than hardware. Check through the programs listed in Add or Remove Programs (I mentioned before) for programs related to HIDs and look at uninstalling and updating them.

Finally...it may possibly be due to malware like a keylogger. Run checkers like Spybot and AdAware or online antivirus checkers (look at the sticky posts in the Internet Security forum).

When you post back, let us know the details of how it has been going "haywire ".

i have downloaded and installed the driver from the dell website but it didn't make a difference.

i've tried uninstalling both before but the problem is still there.

what's a docking station? Like an extra external USB hub?

Apparently when i check the device manager, it is USB HID problem, but still i've got no idea how to get rid of it.

I've ran all the programs that i use, adware and spybot but still the problem's the same.

What i meant by haywire is that each time i restart my computer, my laptop somehow doesn't accept my keyboard. So i'll have to uninstall the driver with error, restart my laptop again and let it reinstall the driver before i can use the keyboard.

I am assuming it is a USB wired (not wireless) keyboard. Here is the Belkin download/FAQ page:
    http://web.belkin.com/support/download/download.asp?category=7&lang=1&mode=

Here is the Dell keyboard troubleshooter:
    http://support.dell.com/support/top...08BC8568DE2BA2E040A68F5B2867F0&doclang=en&cs=
I followed it through for what I thought was your problem and found a registry edit for the upper filters, which may be your solution. There are checks for settings, like I expect it should be getting set as a standard 101/102 key keyboard.

If you have checked for software that is related to a similar type of (HID) device and assuming you are running Win XP, if SP3 has been installed that may be a reason (or SP1 in Vista, let us know which OS and SP).

You can get the updated ATI chipset drivers at Dell, that might upgrade the USB controller drivers.

i couldn't find an edit button so i'm double posting.
when i uninstall and reinstall my keyboard drivers, i realized that it automatically installs 2 drivers for the external keyboard.
    Is it normal?
Btw, i'm running on Windows XP SP2

I don't have a laptop system to test, but two drivers does not seem right. It may try to install one, finds something wrong then installs another.

Were you able to check for the drivers or information? Did you run through the troubleshooter?

Are the drivers listed under Universal Serial Bus Controllers or are they under a Keyboard heading?

As I am saying, it may not be the keyboard drivers that are at fault. It may be similar hardware or the software for similar hardware.

Obviously, uninstalling the keyboard drivers is not working. You need to start looking at the drivers and software for similar hardware and start uninstalling and reinstalling those. It doesn't look like it is going to fix itself.
