A friend networked my desktop and my laptop yesterday and this AM when I started the computer things that are checked in msconfig are not showing up in the tray.
    1. Voume contol
    2. APC Parachute ...UPS moitor.
    3. Comodo firewall monitor
These three are not showing up in the tray even though they are checked and they always did before, so I don't know if networking the computers has done something to ruin msconfig or not.

Also, I tried to set up a remote desktop and was completely confused. (I am not very proficient).
I went to ctrl>system>remote and was completely stuck. They wanted a password. For what? For the computer or for the remote? It does not say. (I am the only user)
Would I have to be constantly entering a password or what?
It also said something about it having to use the Windows firewall to set up a remote desktop and I do NOT use the Windows firewall!! I use Comodo and I want to use Comodo. The Windows firewall is nothing I would ever use because you have no way of knowing what it is doing.
Does this mean that I cannot get the laptop to use the desktop?
If that is true the laptop is completely useless to me!
(I have the laptop only because I am very disabled and cannot sit at the desktop for more than a short time as it is too painful to sit here. So if it won't be able to use the PC desktop it would be useless.)

I hope I have not been too confusing but I am old and dumb!!!
Please take those deficiencies into consideration when replying.:D TIA

Have a read here: Using Remote Desktop in Windows XP

And for the password: You can only use Remote Desktop (RD) if you have set a password on the system(s) you want to connect. RD doesn't work when no password is set.

You start an RD 'session' by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection

I won't even try to use the remote desktop at all because my computer is so fouled up with the msconfig not working correctly. And now my Comodo Firewall cannot even be opened. I get a popup that says it has to be started with running this:
    \Device\Hardware volume\Program Files\Comodo\Firewall

I have no idea how to do this, or what it means. and I don't want to use my computer without a firewall.
I am completely lost and I will try to return the laptop to Dell but I doubt if they will take it. I never had all this trouble until the computers were networked.

Networking a computer shouldn't cause these problems. You may ask your friend what he did.

I can't say anything about your firewall, as I never use a 3rd party firewall, Windows firewall works fine for me.

He said nothing he did would cause these problems.
When I try to open Comodo I get this popup:
CFP.exe is not being started from the installation directory. You should run it from
    \Device\Hardware volume\Program Files\Comodo\Firewall

My problem is I don't know what they mean by run it from
    \Device\Hardware volume\Program Files\Comodo\Firewall

Run it HOW? Run it from WHERE? What device...what is hardware volume etc.
I don't know where to find out how to 'run' etc. I don't know how to find Device, whatever that is. This what I need to find out how to do. The directions from the Windows popup are pretty obscure and meaningless.

And msconfig is not working right either...items that are checked are not showing in the tray...and I do not know how to fix msconfig.

(I like Comodo...I do not like Windows firewall because I have no control over it at all and I have no way of knowing what it is letting in and out of my computer.)
I am probably getting all kinds of viruses and garbage because the firewall is not working. So I mostly shut it off.

You said this: Have a read here: Using Remote Desktop in Windows XP

My computer won't do this because that link says:
    1. Insert the XP Pro install disk. The OS was installed by Dell when I bought the computer. It is OEM.

    2. It requires Windows firewall and I cannot do that because I already have a different firewall and you cannot have two firewalls running on the computer.

3.I went ctrl>system>remote. I am the only user and I made a password. My laptop will still not connect remotely with my desktop. Do I need to do something on the laptop?

There must be some way to do this that does not require the Windows XP CD and does not require Windows firewall.

Dell knew what I needed the laptop for and should have told me that it could not be remotely connected to my desktop before selling it to me.

    You did not read correctly.

    To install Remote Desktop Connection on computers running Windows 95 / 98 / NT 4.0 / 2000 Server / 2000 Professional

You don' need an XP install disk since both your computers are XP.

You don't need Windows firewall. You'll need to take more time reading what prompts/instruction say. More then likely it just told you that you need to make sure that the firewall is set u to allow RD traffic (which uses port 3389).

You don't go to control panel. As I said, you go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection .

You have to set the Desktop to allow a remote desktop connection.

Are both computers Windows XP pro?

I went to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Communications > Remote Desktop Connection .
It said to enter the computer name. I did and it said "you are already connected to the console of this computer.'

You have to enter the name of the desktop (when connecting from the laptop), but better yet, enter the IP address of the desktop computer.

Start > Run type cmd, press enter.

Now type ipconfig & press enter. Look for IP address
