Ok guys and gals ---its been a while but once again technology is starting
to be a pain in the backside. I'm running xp media center with sp2 . on a toshiba laptop. I am the only user and have myself ( obviously ) set up as the administrator.
    Here are my basic`stats:
OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
    Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
    System Name ROWDEYREBEL
    System Manufacturer TOSHIBA
    System Model Satellite A105
    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 8 GenuineIntel ~1861 Mhz
    BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies LTD 1.90, 7/5/2006
    SMBIOS Version 2.31
    Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
    System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
    Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
    Locale United States
    Hardware Abstraction Layer Version = "5.1.2600.2562 (xpsp.040919-1030) "
    User Name ROWDEYREBEL\Dusty
Time Zone US Eastern Standard Time
    Total Physical Memory 1,024.00 MB
    Available Physical Memory 549.20 MB
    Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
    Page File Space 2.38 GB
    Page File C:\pagefile.sys

Anywho:D, When i load and or unload some programs , occasionally , it is neccessary to go in to msconfig and remove or uncheck certain statup items . About a month ago I needed to do this and made any and all changes that I needed and when I clicked apply I got this cute little message .

"An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an administrator account to make the specified changes."
And then once again when I click ok . The changes do take effect , but there have been other occurances of which at this time my mind is blank to recall , but they have to do with some sort of system changes that I have wanted to make . Well ---as I said ---I am the administrator and have only 1 logon ---with no other choices---------just don't understand what I have missed to make my puter mad at me . Anyone got a clue where I messed up ?

    Hi Dussman

Lets get some info from your computer.

    Lets look at your startups
    http://www.tombraiderhub.com/download/ardiag.exe
when run give it a couple minutes it will produce a text file post the contents back here.

    Next:

Drag your mouse with left button down accross the text between the lines but not the lines. Once it is highlighted rt click and copy.
    ------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\sc query type= service > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\ScQuery.txt
    ------------------------------------------

Now open a CMD prompt and paste then hit enter twice, close prompt.

There are now 2 new icons on your desktop. Post the contents back to here.

    Mike

Well the good news is I see no sign of Virus's or Malware. But no clear clue to the issue.

This is likely coming from McAfee. Check its Blocked and permitted items and the Firewall exceptions.

I have a general procedure that will shotgun several potential issues. So do the below in the order given.
    --------------------------
In services stop and disable all of the below just to get them out of the way. Can be put back anytime later but I would not as none of them are needed by most home users and very few business users. Basically stuff M$ thought you should have.

    DNS Client
    Fast User switching
    Indexing service
    Messenger
    Net logon
    Net.TCP Port Sharing
    NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
    IPsec services
    QoS RSVP
    Remote Registry
    Uninterruptable power supply
    Universal Plug and play
    Web Client
    Windows media player Network Sharing
    --------------------------

D/L install and run ATF-Cleaner clear all except passwords in all browsers you have.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

D/L and install CCleaner: Clean temps and registery
    http://www.ccleaner.com/download/bui...wnloading-slim

Reboot before continuing with the below.

    --------------------------
    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall BITS

    Repair Permissions

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Get back to us.

    Mike

    A+ for effort !!

Well, that did fix a few other little problems that have been picking at me for some time , but I still have to read Access Denied . I have also tried shutting down all of McAfee's services and programs before rebooting with the same result as if I had done nothing at all. I'm usually pretty good at this , but this one has me scratching my head and my a&$ It wouldn't bother me so much, if I could just make it go away !:D

OK can you get me a screen showing the exact error?

Go to event logs clear them all. Then reboot immediatelyand recheck the logs. They should now only show what happened on shutdown and start up.

Now as soon as you see one of these issues then check the logs and get me the event log errors related to it.

So I wouldn't suggest you disable the DNS Client service, Netlogon, or Fast User Switching. Netlogon in particular you want. DNS Client would be nice too.

Sounds like either a) the OP is not running as an administrator - can you post the output of running "net user %username%" at a command prompt (no quotes) or b) there is an ACL set on a service that msconfig is trying to tinker with. What service are you trying to modify?

    Hi Dussman & Brian

In on a large Corporate DOMAIN where the system is set up to use DNS Client properly! Yes.

I don't understand why anyone would need the DNS Client servies on a stand alone home computer. While it is running in even in manual mode it is still consuming some memory and a few CPU cycles. So it needs to be disabled! It only caches locally anyway.

If it was the only useless service running then it would be OK, but when added to several other unneeded services (Web Client, Windows media sharing, Net Logon, Remote Registry, plus others) it does free some usable RAM and frees CPU cycles.

Besides that it and Remote registry can be a security holes.

Why Net Logon for logging into a Domain Controller when he is not on a Domain?

Why would a single user need Fast user switching. I don't recommend "Switch User" even with many users. It is a poor excuse not to close down apps and log off. It has been a headache for many with lost and corrupted files and disk errors because of improper shutdown.

My advice keep all these off. If you ever need one "likely not" then just turn it back on!

You need to give more details about what you have to turn off in msconfig, the programs that cause this issue!

    Try this!

Create a new Admin level profile say "Supervisor ". Then log on to this account and see if the issue exists.

You may also try Safe mode networking to see if they exist there.

Get this specific info back to us and perhaps we can make some more progress.

    Mike
