You haven't really provided much information on the error, but you'd be surprized how spending 45 minutes or so doing a repair installation of XP can solve a myriad of problems. Just did one tonight after a system file check caused a lockup on the boot screen and I couldn't even get to Safe Mode. All is now well and none of my apps were harmed.
I needed to reinstall the Windows Updates---a good reason to download and save them.

Sicken - if you are having DCOM errors there will be more details in your event logs. If the previous suggestion doesn't work for you, check the event logs and post what you find there.

I'm curious about your answer, Abraxas. What do you mean by a "repair installation" of XP? And whatever that is, are you also saying it's wise to keep those Windows XP Hotfixes in the add/remove section of contr9ol panel (as well as their associated $NTuninstal directories in the Windows directory)?

    Thanks.

    David

dkline--If you already have XP installed and start just as you did the first time to install, you will be met with a screen where Windows searches for previous installations of Windows. It will find your present XP and ask if you want to repair it. If you click "R" in response, setup begins and repairs the present installation with nearly no effect on the apps therein. It clears things up marvelously.
However, most or all of the updates from MS are gone and they need to be reinstalled. By going to WindowsUpdate ahead of time, clicking on Personalize, and choosing to have Windows Catalog on your welcome screen, you can then use that link to download all the updates and save them so they do not need to be downloaded again.

Nothing to do with the uninstall entries.

    Windows Updates reloaded?

Abraxas - This is new to me, as I have had to do repair installs (XP Pro) on several systems, and so far on each one, all fixes that were done via Windows updates and listed in add/remove programs have been there and still been active.

I will concede that these systems were on a LAN with web access so maybe these listed updates were re-downloaded during the install as per M$ (bigbrother Bill) chatty O/S... but as a test on one system I did the 'repair', but yanked the RJ45 before starting. It also retained the updates.

Very interesting. My repair left me with 20+ megs of updates to reinstall. Testing beta software causes me to do this a lot on 2 computers with NIC cards on cable modem. I always need to reinstall the updates.
Of course, I went by what WU told me when I went to the site. How can you tell if an update is still "active "?

The server {03E0E6C2-363B-11D3-B536-00902771A435} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Thats the exact error msg ...To be honest I have no clue what is going on ....

There would have been more information. Source (although probably DCOM in this case) and an event id number which would have been helpful.

If you run IIS and got error event 10010 from User NT Authority/System there is a simple fix at Q327153 or (more likely here) Q325717 describing how to fix the problem if Windows Messenger is the culprit.

If no help with either article, to go Online Help at Microsoft and search on server did not register with DCOM within required timeout and look at the other 11 articles that contain those words.

DCOM - (Distributed Component Object Model) (previously called Network OLE [Object Linking and Embedding]) allows applications to work together on a network. Such things as being able to put a url, file link, or data link in Excel to items living somewhere else.

The server {03E0E6C2-363B-11D3-B536-00902771A435} you see in your error could well be part of your own PC where DCOM is having problems opening some file, service, etc. locally.
