I recently started using Defraggler, a beta piece of free software recommended by a friend. It seemed to do a fine job, and I liked it because it takes a lot less time than the defragger that comes with Win XP.
Yesterday evening, after I defragged my drive using Defraggler, I used the native defragmenter to analyze the drive and saw a huge amount of red, and the popup stated that I should defrag this volume. I did, it took a while. Then, I went back to Defraggler, analyzed the drive, and it showed almost no fragments.
    Whom to believe?

Personally I have never used either of those defrag utilities but I do use Auslogics Disk Defrag and Auslogics Registry Defrag. Both programs are very good at speeding up a slow computer and the defrag only takes about 15 minutes depending on how many files are on the harddrive. If you are interested in it you can download Auslogics Disk Defrag here http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download and Auslocics Registry Defrag here http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/registry-defrag/download. :)

IMHO - leave the registry alone :) You will not see any noticeable difference from a defragged or compressed registry - more likely a lot of grief :)

A strong recommendation from others on the BBS is to stay with the onboard defragger. I use Diskeeper Pro which works in the background on full auto and 'invisitasks' - not even a Notification Area icon to show that it is running.

My drives - all 17 of them are defragged when needed with no user intervention. Unfortunately it is not freeware :)

I dont like either program and I'll tell you why. I used the Auslogics Disk Defrag and when it finished, it said that it found other problems and I needed to buy other software to fix these problems.

Both programs were immediately removed. I'll stick with the Windows Defragmenter

    Diskeeper FTW!

I use Diskeeper 2008 Pro on both Vista (laptop) and XP (gaming desktop). It's not free, but it's excellent..keeps 4 desktop drives (1.5 TB) and the 1 laptop drive (160 GB) in top shape. Never had a single problem with it.
