I created a slipstreamed XP/SP3 CD a few days ago, which I successfully used to do a clean installation of my OS. During the actual installation, I was never asked to input my Windows product key. (I did get asked to 'validate' when I subsequently installed WMP11 patches.)
I'd like to do a clean installation of a friend's OS on her computer, but I'm wondering if my slipstreamed CD can be used for that, given that she obviously has a different product key.
Does anyone know if I can use my CD on a computer that has a different product key? Or could I try installing something like "Magical JellyBean Keyfinder" on her computer after installing XP/SP3 and select the option to change the product key afterwards?
    Thanks!

If your original cd is a Dell OS cd then I wouldn't use it on any other machine;) (dell cd's are preactivated)

And, odds are, it will do the usual check and look for a Dell bios. If the pc is a non Dell, it won't continue.

To clarify Steve's comments further. If she also has a Dell with the same version of XP, you should be OK. Anything other than that and you have a problem. Similarly, any original XP OEM will work with the original OEM key but a Volume User Gold won't work with an OEM key or vice-versa. An OEM CD or a Gold CD isn't going to work with a Dell Key and as Steve has already stated, a Dell CD isn't going to work with any Key other than a Dell Key and those are pre-configured (thats why you never got prompted).

My WinXP Home CD was a "full installation" one, I think it's called. I paid extra for that, after reading that tip here!
I'll give it a shot - worst case scenario, I can reinstall Windows XP Home using her CD, which is OEM, and then install SP3 at the end of that.
    Thanks for the feedback!

Why not just create another slipstreamed CD using her XP disc and slipstreaming SP3? Then she has a CD that will work for sure and, down the road, can be used if she ever has to use the recovery console.

    ;)

    Excellent idea, Rockster!
My slipstreamed disk didn't work on her computer - we got a message that some file was missing. On the other hand, my Home XP installation disk worked fine on her computer, but we did get a popup that she had 30 days left to activate.
I will definitely try to make her a slipstreamed CD, as you suggested.
    Thanks!
