I have an XP SP2 Home Edition. I have automatic updates set to notify me and not download or install. This morning the little yellow shield notified me of the update for Malicious tool thingy, and KB950749

I did as I always do and ran Microsoft update custom. It downloaded and installed both and said it was successful. Rebooted. The yellow shield insisted that I needed both installed. I reverted my C drive with GoBack before I had updated and did get the update for the malicious tool thing done by itself thru the Microsoft update website.

I tried to get the KB 950749 update thru the yellow shield route, I click on download and it appears that nothing happens. Where would it be downloading to anyway? When you click on download should it be downloading AND installing?

I tried getting the update from the windows catalogue and it installs fine but that yellow shield still indicates I need the update 950749. So I reverted my drive to before I installed the update from the the windows catalogue. Now what?

I did install KB 892130 windows validation tool on May 2/08. Could this be my problem?

Any ideas? It's driving me crazy!

Not sure this will help you but this is what happened to me. I have automatic updates set to download and notify me and I decide when to update. I noticed the yellow shield downloading and sometime later it disappeared. A day or two later I decided to reboot and found an update pinned to the turn off tab with no explanation what it was. I took a chance and shut down as instructed and it updated one update. After I brought it back up I checked the add/remove list in the Control Panel and found 950749 had been installed as a hot fix. Don't know why it did that unless it didn't want to give me the option not to install.

Can you tell me exactly where the update was pinned? I looked under the automatic update tab and didn't find it. Just had a place to offer updates previously hidden.

Just wanted to report back that I got the installation to work. The only thing I did differently was to empty the %temp% folder. I used the yellow shield option to download and install. Rebooted. Checked add/remove in control panel and it's listed as installed. No more notifications that I need update. Yippee.

    Alicia,
    thanks for the feedback ... :) ... !

Clearing all "temp" folders and also the Temporary Internet Files prior to installing not only updates to Microsoft Stuff but updates to anything at all is wise and wisdom comes from making mistakes. I assume that you have incorporated that step into your routine from now on, right?

By the way, KB950749 is not required for systems with SP3 ... ... !

Glad to hear you got your update installed, but to answer your question it was pinned on the shut down tab found at start/turn off computer where it offers you the options to Standby, Turn off or Restart.

I usually do empty my temp folders, but of course this time I didn't. :)
