Try uninstalling/re-installing the software that came with the cam.

Hi, It was doing it with a cheaper ( non Microsoft) camera that I had before . my PC is about 5 years old , would it have anything to do with the video & sound card?
It works Ok on Messenger ( slow) and it will let me do a video call but when they switch on their video it locks up.
    Thanks Des.

    Hello Des,

Check if you have a recent update of MS Messenger. Check your version of DirectX, unless you are running Vista, get version 9.0c. You can go to Start -> Run and enter dxdiag, that will tell you about your multimedia.

Des, I might not be the best person to ask. I have never owned one of my own, but have set it up for my daughters.

    Thoughts...
Did you uninstall any software for the old one before installing the new software?

Are there any settings to reduce the "quality ", you may be trying to use too high a setting.

If it happens on transmission to the third party, look at how good your internet connection is.

Hi Arie . I am on adsl and it is supposed to be 256 down and 64 up. and it is a 108 modem but running the online test it is actual 235 down and 52 up.
BUT? I have run the same setup on the wife's ( smaller ram PC) on the same internet connection, mine is connected via cable and her's is wireless ( only 54 ), and it doesn't lock up but the quality is worse.
And it seems to works OK on Messenger,
it does it even when I run the camera by itself, not online.
I can send out video and sound good as gold but when they send to me , it freezes??????
It has been suggested it may be that the video card is not good enough?
Thanks for you interest, Regards Des.

    That is your audio controller.
Look at the different tabs, they have information about multimedia controllers. It will have a listing of the device, the drivers it is using, etc. You can also put msinfo into Start -> Run, that will list all your hardware.

Do you have the motherboard manual? That will tell you what hardware you have in the specifications. If the graphics adapter is an add-in (PCI) card, not onboard, you will need find the manual/information for it separately.

A webcam should not need a high powered graphics adapter. It should be not hard for the graphics unless the webcam settings may be set too high. Check the System Requirements for the webcam (or let us know the model). The System Requirements will be printed on the packaging if you still have it, or will be in the information on the drivers/software CD.

Hi Arie & Mattman. I can use the camera OK in Live messenger , it only has the problem in Skype, ( I can send video out, but not receive it.
I will double check for more info.
The VX1000 's specification requirements are well with in those needed .
    Thanks for help Cheers Des.

I did a websearch and found some topics at the Skype forums. One thing they strongly suggest is that the versions of Skype at both ends are the same. There was a similar problem with a VX1000 that appeared to be fixed with upgraded graphics drivers (update the chipset drivers first). They also talk about DirectShow, but AFAIK, it is part of DirectX. You want to see if you can reinstall DirectX 9.0c after you have a good set of drivers installed.

Check around at the Skype forums and their FAQs, etc.
